Welcome back ladies. Recruitment season is finally upon us. As I see it, most of us are extremely excited but so stressed out at the same time. We are back to spirit week, dress checks, last minute shopping and of course the week of recruitment.
People that haven't gone through recruitment probably don't get the whole love/hate relationship sorority girls have with it. Well let me tell you, it's a week of hell filled with glitter, smiles, a whole lot of singing, and non-stop talking to the PNMs (Potential New Members). It's really not all bad. There are a lot of things I really love about recruitment. But then there a lot of things that can make it hell.
WE GET TO BUY A WHOLE NEW WARDROBE.
Yes, you've heard me right. Our recruitment chair picks out the outfits we wear. Although, she has a very particular list of what she wants you to wear, you pretty much have the freedom to go and get anything you want within the requirements. That's one of the best parts, unless you wait until the last minute (which usually happens).
WE SPEND MOST OF RECRUITMENT STANDING...IN HEELS
This is unfortunately one of the things that make recruitment hell. I mean unless your Beyoncé strutting your stuff in heels 24/7, you most likely need bandaids all over your feet from the blisters they cause. You may even possibly need to go up a shoe size by the end of the week because your feet are so sore and swollen. Say goodbye to your pedicure ladies.
WE GET TO MEET THE PNMs.
One of the best parts is meeting all the friendly and excited faces that are eager to hear about why they should want to become a part of your sorority. Yes, it's a lot of talking but you get to learn so much about these new girls all while deciding who will best fit into your sisterhood.
WE HOLD CONVERSATIONS FOR A LONG, LONG TIME.
This can get really really hard when there are girls you have absolutely nothing in common with. Although we are somehow great at making it work, it's like pulling teeth to get information out of some of the PNMs. Some girls are just super socially awkward (like me).
WE GET TO BOND WITH OUR SISTERS.
This is one of the most important things to me. We spend all of spirit week preparing to talk with PNMs all while growing a closer relationship to our sisters. We even make new friends within our sorority. This gives us a chance to bond with sisters you don't usually hang out with because you are paired with girls outside of your friend groups.
YOU GET MINIMAL TO NO SLEEP.
For those of you who love their sleep, forget it. You have to be prepared to wake up early to help set up for the PNMs arrival. On a good night, you might get four hours of sleep. Staying late is also required to help clean up and prepare for the next day.
PICTURES, PICTURES, PICTURES FOR INSTAGRAM.
You're always prepared for pictures. This is because you are fully ready every single day. Your hair, makeup, and outfit are all on point. And you're looking fab. This means you can take as many pictures as you want. Guess what? There is no filter needed.
YOU USUALLY END UP SICK.
It's true. You better stock up on your airborne and Emergen-C because you're going to need it. You're stuck for over twelve hours in the confined space with limited ventilation. This means you are breathing in each other's germs. Expect either a head cold or sore throat.
BID DAY.
It's basically Christmas people. Although bid day always ends up being the hottest day of the year, it doesn't matter because it is the best. Waiting for the PNMs to run to their homes is so exciting because this is the day you finally get to meet your new members. And of course...you know the week is finally over.
