Many people don't actually know the artist Halsey when I speak about her songs. When I say she's the girl voice in "Closer" by The Chainsmokers I get a big "OHHHH!". But over time, Halsey's name keeps getting bigger and bigger, topping Billboard's Top 100, and other alternative charts. I couldn't be happier for such a humble artist.

Ashley Frangipane, AKA Halsey, started releasing covers of songs on YouTube and Tumblr around the age of 14. Her first debut album dropped in 2014 called Room 93 and she's been topping the charts since with 2 more albums, Badlands and Hopeless Fountain Kingdom.

Halsey is an amazing artist and a lyrical genius. Her lyrics are complicated and aesthetically pleasing. Things you've never heard before. But other than writing amazing music, she is real and open with her fan-base. She admitted to be diagnosed with a bipolar disorder at 17 among other things. She sings about the darkness in some of her songs.

Halsey is one of my favorite artists, and here are some reasons why.

She is real. As stated above, she told her fans about her bipolar disorder she was diagnosed with at the age of 17. This was after a suicide attempt which led to 17 days in a psychiatric hospital. In 2015, she came out as being "tri-bi": biracial, bisexual, and bipolar. Halsey is open about all aspects of her life. Her personal life, her dating life, and especially her difficult past being broke and homeless.

Her lyrics are complicated, dark and beautiful. Similar to Ed Sheeran, Halsey doesn't just bluntly say what she means in her songs. She has a complex way of saying everything. For example, in her song Gasoline it says,

"You can't wake up, this is not a dream, / You're part of a machine, you are not a human being, / With your face all made up, living on a screen, / Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline"

You get that from society's body image pressures, it dehumanizes people of both genders without her straight up saying it. Plus, her voice is so unique and soothing.

She is open. She keeps her fans up-to-date on her life on all social media platforms. She isn't afraid to speak her mind on any given topic and about her life. She is very open about her recreational drug use after her diagnosis with bipolar. She doesn't care what people think of her!

She is gorgeous. Okay, maybe this isn't a reason to like someone but you name someone else that can pull off blue hair, lavender hair, brown hair, shaved head, cornrows, I mean, you name it and she can do it.

If you're new to Halsey's music and want to check it out, here are 13 songs I personally recommend:

1. Is There Somewhere?

2. Trouble - Stripped

3. Control

4. Colors

5. Hurricane

6. Roman Holiday

7. Strange Love

8. Gasoline

9. 100 Letters

10. Bad at Love

11. Now or Never

12. Don't Play

13. Eyes Closed

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
