24 Reasons to Love Eastern Illinois University

It is that time where things are settling down at Eastern Illinois University. If you're taking a stroll in the quad, you're seeing nothing but excited, nervous, and advocated students willing to take their careers places by attending Eastern Illinois University. If you're at the point where you are a high school freshman or a potential transfer to another college, then listen up kiddos.

1. From the moment you arrive on Move-In Day, you'll notice that the staff is extremely excited and welcome to have you attend your university, as well as helping you move in.

2. All the classes that you have are a relatively short distance. If there is a class where it is a hike, it would take you as much as 15 minutes to walk to your class.

3. The campus is very diverse. You meet a plethora of people coming from either different states, countries, or cities. There are many opportunities to create new friendships.

4. You can be that basic white girl by ordering a Caramel... whatever it is called.

5. Hungry on a Wednesday afternoon? Good. Head to Taylor Hall for Grilled Cheese Wednesdays.

6. Milkshakes from The M.L.K. Union are bae. Kelis was right when saying milkshakes brings boys to the yard. But in this case, it is the students.

7. There are plenty of clubs to join such as going through recruitment for sororities and fraternities, joining the Resident Hall Administration Council, joining Blue Crew,as well as clubs that pertain to your careers

8. Prowl Week is a fun-filled weekend. The weekend you first move in, you have assigned activities that take place everyday and I guarantee you, you will have a blast because I sure did.

9. Home games are worth going to. From singing "Go Big Blue" to dancing every time the football players make a touchdown. As well as seeing the whole stadium wear blue. And if you want to go outside the box, paint your body and face blue.

10. Gearing up before pre-pre-game? Good! Head down 4th Street where you can find Bamca (Cooler version of Chipotle), Pizza Hut, Mickee Dee's, Jimmy John's, Little Caesar's, and much much more.

11. Walking between classes, you spot a Jimmy John's employee handing you a sandwich. Don't contemplate it, just take it! It's free!

12. Too drunk to drive and need a designated driver? Sure! Call Dial-A-Ride, and they will get you where you need to go.

13. Running low on food and other supplies? Okay! Head to Walmart or The Farmer's Market.

14. Need to finish homework last minute? No worries! Head to the Booth Library near Doudna and Ford Hall. It's literally smack dab in the middle!

15. Process of doing laundry. Yeah, no one likes doing laundry including me, but if you get a laundry buddy, it will make your hour or so go by faster!

16. You have a car and want some more beer before the next day? Good! There is a drive-thru liquor store on Lincoln Avenue and 4th Street!

17. Worried about fees for getting your textbooks? No need to worry! Textbooks are free!

18. You can practically touch the squirrels anywhere you spot them. Just don't pet them or make them mad because they have anger inside them, I'm sure of it.

19. Feeling extra cheesy? Get some Chubby sticks. You won't regret it.

20. Heading to a frat house for a party? Make sure you bring a little portable fan with you because when you are hardcore dancing, you might need one.

21. Snowy day in the Chuck? That's OK! Spend a night in with your floor mates and/or roommate(s) and drink some hot chocolate!

22. Think you can sing? Cool! Head to 7th Street where you can sign your lungs out!

23. Instead of calling it Charleston, just call it 'The Chuck'. No questions asked.

24. Memories are made here, believe it or not. From random visits in the bathroom, to meeting people on your floor.

No matter if you are different from the others, it does not matter when it comes to Eastern Illinois University. The people you will meet you will remember for the rest of your life. The atmosphere and independence from Eastern is quite satisfying and relaxing. As the days go by you will start thinking, Eastern Illinois University is my home.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
