I always grew up having household pets (dogs and cats mostly), but they were always the family pet and not just mine exclusively. This past spring, my boyfriend and I decided to get a pet together. He already had a chocolate lab, but he knew how much I wanted my own dog, so we got a German Shepherd.
I was terrified and excited at the same time. Being in college is fun and stressful, but only having to take care of yourself is a lot different than another thing relying on you.
It was a challenge at first, but it was well worth it.
I have my best friend with me through the good and the bad. When I've had a bad day and I come home, seeing how excited my dog is to see me turns my whole day around. When I am excited that I passed a test, playing with my puppy makes me so happy. When I'm tired or sad, cuddling up with her and watching TV is the best solution.
It can be a bit nerve-wracking, trying to make sure ends meet, your dog gets enough of your time, enough exercise, food, etc., but it is well worth it. She pushes me to do my best because I want to give her the best life possible. I know she won't be here for my entire lifetime, so I want her life to be joyful.
My family might think that it was a mistake to get a dog while in college, but I can assure you that it wasn't. It was the best decision that I have ever made.
If you've been considering getting a dog while you're still in school, the only advice I can say is that it is your choice, no one else's. It was definitely worth it for me, and I hope that it is for you too.
