The Reality of Big-Little Week

Little loves Big!

The Reality of Big-Little Week

As this weekend comes to a close and the homework piles up, the thoughts and daydreams of all my fellow Kappa Delta babies and Chi Omega and Delta Zeta friends are related to Big-Little Week.

This 4-day extravaganza has been long awaited and is finally here! We have all been told that this eventful week is better than Christmas, your birthday, Valentine’s Day, and Halloween combined. Some girls truly cannot fathom the idea of gifts pouring from buckets each day. Some girls don’t want the gift giving to end. However, most girls just can’t wait until that Friday evening, as the curiosity and excitement are both running high, and the reveal is more realistic than ever.

Of course, the endless amount of gifts and love is exciting. I mean, who doesn’t love gifts? And of course I would love to constantly be given buckets of my favorite snacks, t-shirts galore, and eloquently made canvasses. But with my self-diagnosed OCD, the limited space in my dorm room would run out and everything would begin to pile up. Even with all these gifts I have yet to receive, I already know that the greatest of them all will be my future Big sister.

I have always been the big sister. Don’t get me wrong, it is great to be considered a role model for my younger sister, even if we are very different. But being the little one and having someone who wants to be my Big sister adds a bit of excitement for me. Of all the big/little relationships I have seen within KD, I have no doubt in my mind that my Big will be one of my best friends.

Call me cheesy, corny, whatever you want. But this is a big deal for most girls! We get to be a part of a lineage that chose us to be a part of their family. This is similar to the feeling you get when you receive your bid from a sorority. They want you, you want them. As Hunter Hayes says, your Big wants “to make you feel wanted” with gifts and love!

To recap, I have three reasons (amongst so many more) why having a big sister is going to be one of the better moments of my 2015.

  1. Your big sister is your 2 a.m. call- Whether you’re having an emotional breakdown and need a place to nap for the day or just endured a horrific break up and need her stash of food and wine … your big will be there for you. Not only will she probably never let you live down the questionable reason for the 2 a.m. phone call, but she will share her fuzzy blanket with you. That, my friends, is true love.
  2. Your big sister is just like you- Odds are, the reason you were chosen and paired off with your future big is because you’re so similar. Maybe you and your big are crazy, or maybe you and your big choose Netflix over a night out. No matter the case, your big is most likely your long lost twin.
  3. Your big sister is a lifetime relationship- The blessing of getting a big sister is that the relationship is unlike many others. Of course, you will be best friends with many other girls, but there is an unspoken bond between you and your big that is unique. And on the dreadful day when your big goes abroad or graduates, leaving you for a semester alone, you know that she will still be there ... cheering you on during Senior Fifth or advising you on what life is like in the real world. Also keep in mind, she will make a great bridesmaid!

Having a big is an exciting adventure in itself. It is a sure guarantee that from Friday on, my big and I will be together sharing some serious GTs.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
