Monday night I received an email from Odyssey stating that I now had a new account and would need to begin writing. I was ecstatic. How cool is it to be asked to write for one of the most well-known websites in the millennial era?! Pretty stinking cool!
I began looking at other articles and seeing who the other writers were. Not going to lie, I was a little disappointed that I had known so many of the other writers. When I got the original email I thought that I was unique, that I was specifically called to be a writer. Once I saw how many other writers I knew, I immediately felt like this wasn't as big of a deal, like there was no reason for me to be a writer because anybody could be a writer.
This is a mindset that we all have too often in all areas of our life. Sports, school, hobbies, jobs, anything that we do we want to be unique and original; the only one doing it. We want to take on the task of changing the world all on our own so we can tell everybody that we did it; that we made the difference.
Or at least that's how I often feel. I love to write because I want to inspire others. I have this dream of changing the world and I've grown up thinking that I have to do it all alone or it wouldn't be as important.
Oh, could I be any more wrong.
One of the biggest things I've learned this year is how important unity is. How can we expect to change the world when we are all competing against each other, fighting to be the one person who can say they made a difference.
Now I'm not saying competition is bad — it's good. Very good, in fact. Ask anyone, I love competition! A little healthy competitiveness is great to push us to not only work harder but also to accomplish our dreams at a higher level.
It's just good to have some support and encouragement from others along with it.
But the point of talking about unity is that it made me realize how awesome it is that I know so many of the other writers! We, as millennials, are so passionate and inspired to make a difference. If we work together we will be able to make an ever greater difference in the world.
With all of this being said, I am so excited to now be writing for Odyssey and I can't wait to support and encourage my fellow writers. This will be an awesome opportunity to build relationships, receive constructive criticism, and be encouraged by my new and old friends within Odyssey.
What areas in your life do you have this kind of mindset? Have you thought about changing it? Because only you have that power.
Oh, and by the way mom, I'm now a writer for Odyssey! Surprise!
