If you haven’t heard of her by now, you might know her as the “anorexic woman that made the dramatic transformation”.
Rachael Farrokh, 37, weighed only 40 pounds at 5’7 when she made her YouTube video asking for help and announced that she was close to death. For the past ten years she has battled anorexia which is a lack or loss of appetite for food and an emotional disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat. Farrokh was extremely sick in her video, she was breathless and skeletal and asked for the help of others. The video went viral and raised almost $200,000 for her medical treatments on her GoFundMe page. Then a month later, she made a public announcement that she wouldn’t have a lot of time left if she wasn’t given proper treatment.
Bouncing back and forth from a treatment center in San Clemente, California to a treatment center in Portugal that she attends now, many have kept up with her story and progress through her FaceBook Page: Rachael’s Road to Recovery.
Now Farrokh has made a transformation, earlier this week a healthier Rachael participated in the second annual March against Eating Disorders this week. Many people view Anorexia as a deadly disease and that the road to recovery is a long shot but Farrokh is living proof that it’s possible. Farrokh currently works to raise awareness and help others with eating disorders and quotes: “ I’m excited about life, because what was a glimmer of hope 3 months ago has turned into a certainty to live. I regained the clarity and strength of my mind. My goal in this recovery process is to create awareness and education in order to help others battling this disease.”
