After geeking out about "Hamilton" with a history professor this past weekend, I'm reminded of the power Lin-Manuel's words are imbued with. His lyrics really pack a punch, and I can't believe how much you can work with from this musical. So here with some April inspiration, inspired by a musical masterpiece, here are six inspirational quotes from "Hamilton:"
1. On Working Hard:
"There would have been nothin’ left to do/ For someone less astute/ He woulda been dead or destitute/ Without a cent of restitution/ Started workin’, clerkin’ for his late mother’s landlord/ Tradin’ sugar cane and rum and all the things he can’t afford/ Scammin’ for every book he can get his hands on/ Plannin’ for the future see him now as he stands on/ The bow of a ship headed for a new land/ In New York you can be a new man."
If Alexander Hamilton hadn't worked his butt off, there would be no national bank, no federal reserve, and no "Hamilton: An American Musical." There's no limit to what you can accomplish if you put your mind to it. Direct your passion, set a goal, and work until you achieve it.
2. On Being Yourself:
"Death doesn’t discriminate/ Between the sinners/ And the saints/ It takes and it takes and it takes/ And we keep living anyway/ We rise and we fall/ And we break/ And we make our mistakes/ And if there’s a reason I’m still alive/ When everyone who loves me has died/ I’m willing to wait for it.../ I am the one thing in life I can control.../ I am inimitable/ I am an original."
While I imagine that not all of us want to do the same things in life as Aaron Burr, his steady view of the world, one of hard work and patience, is underlined by being yourself. It doesn't matter who you are or what your talents are, you are "inimitable" and an "original." No matter what someone else is doing, they literally cannot do it the same way that you can, and that's special.
3. On Knowing What You Want:
"I’ve been reading Common Sense by Thomas Paine/ So men say that I’m intense or I’m insane/ You want a revolution? I want a revelation/ So listen to my declaration:/ “We hold these truths to be self-evident/ That all men are created equal”/ And when I meet Thomas Jefferson/ Unh!/ I’m ‘a compel him to include women in the sequel!"
Angelica knows what she wants and is not afraid to go after it. She is a hardcore feminist in a time already chaotic with Revolution and she still fought for what she believed in. If you believe strongly in something, go for it! You never know what could happen!
4. On Appreciating Your Blessings:
"Look around, look around at how lucky we are/ To be alive right now"
If there's anyone who appreciates the blessings in her life, it's Eliza. She focuses on the good where she can, even if her world is falling apart around her. Even if you're feeling defeated, just try to think of one good thing that happened that day, and then try to think of another, and another, and another, until you begin to see all the bright spots in your day instead of the darkness.
5. On Well-Deserved Relaxation:
"If I say goodbye, the nation learns to move on/ It outlives me when I’m gone/ Like the scripture says:/ 'Everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree/ And no one shall make them afraid.'/ They’ll be safe in the nation we’ve made/ I wanna sit under my own vine and fig tree/ A moment alone in the shade/ At home in this nation we’ve made/ One last time."
There's no one who deserves a break more than George Washington. After countless years of service, he recognizes that it's time for him to relax and enjoy the fruits of his labor. Even if there's at least a thousand things on your to-do list, if you're feeling especially stressed, it may be time to take a break and relax. Whether it's taking a nap, walking across campus, or grabbing lunch with someone you miss, as long as you feel a bit less stressed afterwards, it was some well-deserved relaxation!
6. On Leaving A Legacy:
"Who lives,/ Who dies,/ Who tells your story?"
There's no telling the countless people you impact every day, whether it's the person you held the door for, your friends, your teachers, your family, or even just someone you smile at but don't quite know who they are. There's no telling how people perceive you and how your actions affect them. Who's going to tell your story? How will they talk about you? It's important to remember that the only things we truly leave behind in this world are the memories of how we lived our lives. And while this thought is a bit morbid, it's important to remember that everything we say and do affects someone, so we need to be conscious of what we do every day.
"Hamilton" may be the story of an orphan immigrant from St. Nevis who made some waves during the founding of our nation, but it's also a source of inspiration and a reminder to live our lives to the story. You never know what's going to happen, so it's important that you don't hold back and miss your shot at something truly great.
