A quick rant on why you should thrift shop:
Shopping on a college budget is downright sad. Going to the mall and feeling guilty for buying a 15$ shirt is even more sad. This is exactly why college students should try thrift shopping. If you're not already a thrift shopper yourself you should become one. University of New Hampshire covers a wide range of style among their students from preppy, to hipster to downright bum. Either way all people of any style preference can find at least one thing they like at a thrift shop. To be honest a ton of my favorite clothes of mine are from Goodwill or Salvation Army. My favorite things to thrift shop for are t-shirts, flannels, sweatshirts, sweaters and jackets.
I honestly think I get more compliments on the clothes I buy from goodwill or salvation army than the clothes I buy full price at retail stores. Saying this- the compliments are from people who adore rundown flannels and are t-shirt fanatics like me. I love seeing the reaction on other peoples faces when they compliment me on something I am wearing and I tell them that its from Goodwill. Priceless. I am not ashamed I shop at thrift stores at all. I honestly am proud. I actually love telling people my clothes are from Goodwill. Just the feeling of being like "ya I thrifted this, no big deal" is amazing. Most people reply with "You've got to take me with you sometime." Of course I tell them I will but will I ever go with them? Most likely not. The one huge tip on going thrift shopping is to go by yourself. I know it sounds a little selfish but trust me, there is only so much good stuff you can find at a thrift store and you want it all for yourself! You don't want your friend to steal that super cute warn in crew neck especially if its for for three dollars! One person who is always great to go thrift shopping with is your grandma. She will insist to buy you your thrifted clothes and you wont feel guilty because its SO CHEAP.
Durham has a great thrift store right downtown called Echo Thrift Shop which is in the basement of the Community Church of Durham. They pride themselves on being economically and environmentally friendly plus 25% of all of their proceeds go to organizations or individuals in need. This thrift shop is one of the best I have ever been to. They sell great brands like Columbia, Patagonia, Timberland and many more. Don't forget to donate to thrift stores too. People like us who get rid of clothes all the time are just the people who keep thrift shops up and running! Get what you give.
Point of my rant: thrift shopping is way too overlooked but its time to put an end to that. College students with college budgets need to start thrifting asap because it really is the best thing ever.
