If it just so happens that someone catches you singing to yourself, gets wind of you being in a chorus in high school, or miraculously discovers your cup song video from middle school on Facebook, you know what questions you’re bound to get.
If you're a singer like me, you have prepared answers for all of these questions. Here are a few things you may be asked (and a few thoughts you may have in response).
1." You sing!?”
How do you even answer that? Yeah…I sing, but doesn’t everyone? Maybe not everyone is very good at it...but yes. I can sing.
2. "Oh my gosh Can you sing for me!?”
Um… I could if I really wanted to but I don’t really just want to break out into song here in public. No one likes being put on the spot, not even singers. So… maybe later, I guess?
3. "Who did you get that voice from!?”
Is a good singing voice even genetic? Is musical talent built into my genes? I have no clue. So, maybe I get it from my aunt that leads the church choir? I don’t know, but that’s what I’m going with. (It’s definitely not from my parents, I can tell you that.)
4. "Have you auditioned for 'American Idol'!?”
5. “Do you have a YouTube channel!?”
People think that just because you can sing means you post videos all over the Internet of you sitting in front of your computer, belting Taylor Swift mash-ups. Okay, yeah maybe most singers do that. But the majority of us aren’t going to be the next Justin Bieber. So thanks for liking, commenting and subscribing, but these videos are probably as far as I’m gonna get.
6. "Do you play guitar too?!”
Singing and playing guitar isn’t always a package deal. Not everyone can do it. We’re not all multi-talented. If you’re a singer and you can play guitar, kudos to you.
7. "Can you do all that 'Pitch Perfect' stuff!?”
As obsessed with that movie as I am… I’m not an Acapella star. I beatbox for fun and can harmonize a little, but that movie isn’t as realistic as it seems. As much as I aspire to be a Barden Bella… nope. I’m not Hailee Steinfeld nor am I, Anna Kendrick. Sorry.
8. "Did you take singing lessons?!”
For some singers, the answer is yes. Maybe their talent came from learning and practicing all the time with a voice teacher, but it’s not for everyone. It just comes naturally for some people; some people are just born with the ability to sing well. People are usually surprised when the answer is no.
You might as well just sing a few bars for them so they shut up. They'll gush over your voice for a little bit and then it will be over. Good luck, fellow singer!
