It's important to ask these questions to your roommate every year unless you've lived with them before. Even if you've been friends with them forever, you never know everything about someone until you live with them. All of these are especially important for your freshman year before your (possible) first roommate situation.
1. What time do you go to bed?
If your new roommate is a night owl and you are an early-to-bed, early-to-riser, you may run into some issues. The purpose of these questions is to just know what the issues may be so that you can work around them.
2. What time do you normally get up?
The same with the previous question, you need to be aware if they get up four hours before school to do their hair and makeup at the mirror in the room. You may want to get a sleep mask.
3. Where do you study?
Some people like to study in their room, while others can only study in the library. If your new roommate wants to study in the room, you need to be considerate of that.
4. What are you like when you study?
When I study, I need silence. It worked out where my roommate would use headphones most of the time, but if your roommate has to be listening to music at full volume, there's going to need to be a little compromise.
5. What do you want the main purpose of our room to be?
Some people envision their room being the hangout spot of the hall. Whether this means a couch in the middle of the floor or lots of people and pillows everywhere, if you want it as your quiet escape from everything, you may have some issues.
6. What's your schedule like?
It's good to know when they have an 8:30 class so you can be a little more conscientious about coming in quietly the night before.
7. Are you planning to go home a lot?
If they are going to be going home every weekend, save learning to play guitar until then so that they don't have to listen to you trying to practice.
8. How do you feel about people sleeping over?
Even if your roommate is at home for the weekend, it is important to respect their wishes about having other people sleep over. How would you feel if you found out they had someone over when you weren't there?
9. How neat are you?
Sure, everyone likes to have a neat living space, but sometimes, it's just not possible. When Finals Week sets in, you should know that everyone is going to get nasty. But on a daily basis, are they going to leave dirty dishes for a week, or are they done as soon as they finish eating?
10. Do you have any allergies?
Are they cool with having peanut butter in the room, or do you need to leave your favorite Jif at home in case they die from smelling peanuts?
11. Do you have a car?
Will they be hitting you up for rides to Wal-mart on a weekly basis?
12. How do you feel about temperature?
Personally, I have to have my room cool because I can't live in a hot room.
13. Do you drink?
Is it one drink, or is it getting DRUNK every weekend?
14. Do you smoke?
I don't want everything smelling like smoke.
15. What food is off limits to share?
I don't want you standing over me with a knife while I'm sleeping because I ate your last strawberry pop-tart.
