We get a bad rep, that's for sure. To be frank though, we can totally be normal people. As a self-proclaimed fangirl myself, here are a few reasons we can be totally normal.
We absolutely do not need your approval on what we like. Whether we are freaks for music, movies, books, etc., we will not be taken down by your negativity. We know that people will always have opinions, and you are free to have yours. But ours is that our fav thing is life.
Half the time you have no idea who we are. We are the people behind the blogs, the fanart, the fanfics. Our screen names and URLs are our escape. We know how to keep a straight face when watching an adorable video with our favorite actor or reading a story that is tearing us up inside and breaking our hearts.
We have our own communities. Maybe you think you have that one weird friend that obsesses over something too much, but he or she definitely has friends that are in the same boat. We will talk for hours about our favorite scenes, how characters interact, and how we felt. Those feelings and thoughts are things that you cannot take away from us. Our safe haven is just that—safe—because it is always there. No one is going to say we are dumb for liking a superhero or believing in magic, because we understand each other. Everyone in our community is there to give support, and that is something you don't always find in real life people.
Judge us in your own opinion. Fine, but don't be rude about it. Some people are obsessed with cars, with hunting, with cats. Whatever it is, everyone has that one thing that they can gush about: Don't try to take ours away. Just because ours works on the internet or the TV screen or in words, doesn't make it any less real.
Everyone has a hard time so let us live life. We allow you to obsess over your car or your weekend get away and listen intently. Maybe next time you meet someone in person, let them tell you all about their favorite character. Watch their eyes light up as they get so excited.
Thank you for indulging our somewhat unconventional hobbies. We know it is not for everyone, but it is definitely for us.
P.S. We do know some people are totally weird and over the top. Don't hold all of us to that standard.
