It has been almost six months since January 1, and I bet everyone has forgotten about his or her New Year’s Resolution because I know I surely have.
NEWS FLASH: You still have more than six months to finally say, “I actually achieved my New Year’s resolution!”
Let’s be real, it is not easy to break a habit or start a habit; actually it seems almost impossible. But on December 31, 2015 do you really want to be downing a bottle of champagne alone looking on the past year and how much of a waste it was? I do not, and I highly doubt you do either.
So, with these six more months let’s conquer those New Year’s resolutions we’ve had for the past five years, so we can FINALLY make some new ones.
Here are the top four most common New Year’s resolutions and my tips for conquering them.
1. “My New Year’s resolution is to lose weight.”
Losing weight is A LOT easier said than done, so let’s break it up into two categories: Working out and eating healthy.
- Working out: I know the gym is intimidating, trust me. I do not want those gym rat eight-pack men watching me work out as I try to get my abs out of hibernation. So, to make things easier, ride your bike or walk a mile. While watching your favorite shows, try doing crunches, calf raises or squats. If you do something every day, you are guaranteed to lose weight.
- Eating healthy: With summer coming, the best fruits are in season. Instead of grabbing that chocolate bar grab those watermelon slices and instead of those fries try strawberries with Cool Whip. If you just swap out one piece of junk food everyday with something healthy, it makes your resolution ten times easier. A huge key to eating healthy is to drink water every day!
2. "My New Year's resolution is to save money."
I think I can speak for most college students by saying we are more often than not completely broke. So my suggestion is to save $5 every week. Set those five ones, one five or 20 quarters aside, and before you know it, you will be richer than Richie Rich. If you can’t seem to do that, try staying in every once in a while. If you stay in, you don’t spend money, if you don’t spend money, you save money! It’s simple!
3. "This year's resolution is to be happy."
This is a common resolution that no one seems to be able to achieve. What is the key to happiness you ask? I have two answers:
- Be yourself: Stop being someone you're not to impress that cute boy in your English class or that pretty girl you saw at the party. I promise if you do, you will start to smile more, love more, and ultimately, be happier.
- Help others, but don’t sacrifice your own happiness: Many times we do everything we can to please everyone else, and at the end, we find ourselves depressed and lonely. At the same time, the best way to be happy is by helping others and by giving. Ultimately, help others, but don’t forget to give yourself a little TLC. Sometimes it’s okay to say no to someone so you can have five minutes to yourself. Find that line of helping others and helping yourself, and I guarantee happiness will follow.
4. "This year, I am going to get myself a boyfriend/girlfriend."
My advice to people who have this resolution: Don’t. Do not make it a resolution to find a significant other because you will find yourself searching for something you don’t want and settling when you deserve better. If you let things happen the way God plans it, you will find your loved one when you are ready. Relax. Be happy. Be with friends. If you have great friends you won’t even think about having a boyfriend or girlfriend.
So, people of the great world, JUST DO IT!!!! Let's make a pact right now to put our resolutions back in motion so we aren't that depressed loser at the New Year's party.
