Long-distance relationships are not as easy as they seem. I have recently involved myself in what would be the longest, hardest and most frustrating nine months of my life: a long distance relationship. They say that time flies... Try saying that when you are 550 miles away from your boyfriend. Yes, there are those short Thanksgiving and spring breaks, that long winter break and I didn't forget the three months off for summer, but it was never easy. There was never a moment where I could tell myself that this would ever become easier.
Don't worry about making that pros and cons list because I've already tattooed it onto my skin and ready for you to read. As you can tell by the tone of this article and the obvious facts that long-distance relationships are solely there to destroy your inner being; the cons outweigh the pros.
Here are some of my pros and cons.
Pros
1. More time to yourself.
They say you have to love yourself before somebody else can. Being in a long-distance relationship means that you have more leisure time and time to find yourself. Love yourself before you love someone else.
2. More pillows for yourself.
Yea, that's right. With nobody to have right next to you in your bed, that means all that space and extra pillows waiting for you to binge watch Netflix with that pint of mint chocolate chip ice cream at the edge of your bed.
3. You can let loose.
No makeup. No shaving. All natural. Warning that during this time food babies are born. Don't worry, you are not pregnant. It is just Chipotle. Also, don't be shocked if you feel like a potato and your jeans don't fit the same anymore.
4. You appreciate the little things.
You start to treat every moment as if it were the last. You appreciate every moment together and never take anything for granted.
5. You have an excuse to be super romantic with each other.
Being apart for so long causes excitement when you see each other and the constant need to be "lovey-dovey." This is the most exciting part of the relationship.
Cons
1. No Saturday movie nights.
Yes, it's true. Those rainy Saturday nights are very lonely and now you have no one to watch "The Notebook" with.
2. All physical interaction is over.
You have to travel just for a kiss, a hug or any kind of physical interaction. Here is where you discover an app already downloaded to your phone called FaceTime.
3. You feel alone all the time.
Even hanging out with friends, loneliness is still a feeling that is present. Knowing that your other half is 550 miles away creates a hole in your stomach and eternal sadness.
4. Fear of someone else.
Although there is a mutual trust, there's still that insecurity and fear that lives inside of you of the absolute worst.
5. Missing each other is ‘gut-wrenchingly, knot-in-your-stomach, want to cry, bad.’ And some days it’s completely unbearable.
Those random phone calls are essential in order to get through the day. Calling to see how their day is going, what they ate for lunch, or anything just to hear their voice can brighten a persons day.
And even though you might feel like this:
And this:
Never forget this:
This:
And:
Moments like this that make it all worth it. Life is all about taking chances, trusting our feelings, finding happiness, appreciating memories and learning from the past.
