I'm In Love With My College Mattress Topper And I'm Not Ashamed

When picking out college dorm room items I think that my mattress topper was the thing I was most excited to purchase. I’d dreamt of having the comfiest bed with the comfiest pillows. I wanted a bed that everyone wanted to sit on and a bed that I would get the most out of in terms of my beauty sleep.

About a week before coming to Colgate, I was set on this $200 one. I’d convinced my parents, I had a couple friends who had gotten the same one and I was excited to get the comfortable bed I had always dreamt of having. My ideal of a “perfect” bed took a turn when my mom had texted me that she had purchased a $30 one from Century 21 in New York City. I was devastated. How could she buy a mattress topper without consulting me? To say the least, I was upset and there was nothing nobody could say to me that would get me to feel better.

*fast forward to a month into college”

“Grandma, would you care to join us for dinner or will you be in bed for the rest of the day?”

“No, I’m good. I’m going to finish watching this episode and then do some work. Thanks for asking, though. Enjoy dinner!”

You may be thinking: Who is grandma? And why does this person seem like such a loser? I have an answer to both of those questions. “Grandma” is my new nickname and no, I am not a loser. At least I don’t think I am. Anyway, you would think that I would be embarrassed by being called grandma by a majority of my friends, but I take it as a compliment. I am going to be 100% honest and say that being called “grandma” is a compliment. At first, I thought it was insulting, but the term grew on me. I receive texts being referred to as “Ma” and I find it hilarious that one of the youngest freshman on campus (me) is being referred to as an old woman.

The reason I am in always in my room and the nickname “grandma” was coined is because I am in love with my mattress topper. I went into college very upset with my mother and the thought of having to sleep on the topper my mother got me made me cringe. I hate to say it, but that mattress topper is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I receive the best sleep, I am always comfortable, and my friends enjoy sitting on my bed and laying on my bed despite my best efforts to get them off.

I, Grace Campbell, am obsessed with my bed and how comfortable it is. I can’t thank my mom enough for the most economic and quality purchase she has ever made.

And to all of those who call me “Grandma” and “Ma”, you wish you had a bed as comfortable as mine.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
