To society, we are known as “anti-choice,” “ignorant,” and “small minded.” We are a select few, often overturned and overlooked by others. There are a lot of common disbeliefs about being pro-life that I would like to try and clear up as best I can.
1. “You just want to take away our constitutional right of choice.”
Actually no. But by being pro-choice you take away the choice of the baby. Isn’t that exactly what you are fighting for? If you are so gung-ho on having the liberty of choice then why would you support something that takes away the child’s choice of living.
2. “That’s different, the child does not know what choice is.”
OK, but does that give the mother more validation in choosing her own life over the unborn child? If a robber didn’t know stealing was a crime would they not be convicted anymore?
3. “But what if it wasn’t the mother’s fault? What if she got raped?”
Honestly, most women who are raped don’t actually become pregnant. I’m not saying it never happens, or that we should completely ignore the matter. Any sort of violence is a great tragedy. But that would be like saying that since a percentage of partners are domestically abused that we should outlaw marriages all together. Doesn’t make much sense now does it?
The mother may not have had a choice in whether to become pregnant or not, but does that mean we should blame their unborn child? Was it the baby's fault? Absolutely not! I mean, how could it be? By giving the mother the choice to kill her unborn child she takes away the choice of the baby to live.
4. “The baby would have been put into foster care and have a terrible life anyways. Really we are helping them.”
Are you? Are you really helping? Do you know for a fact that they would have had a terrible life? I know plenty of people that grew up in foster care and still have a wonderful life. Ever heard of Steve Jobs? Yea, he was put in foster care. I’m guessing most of you are reading this on your cell phone (half of you probably have an iPhone). If it weren’t for Steve Jobs, we would not have the technology we have today. You wouldn’t have that phone you’re holding while reading this article. You wouldn’t have that Macbook or that iPad Air. How about Michael Bay? Sarah McLachlan? Marilyn Monroe? Shall I go on? Did they all have terrible lives since they grew up in foster care?
5. “It’s not actually a living human being.”
Really? When does it become one? Third trimester? After being born? Age 32? Is there a certain time when the child can be considered “living.” Riddle me this, if the unborn child is not a human being, then why is it that when a pregnant woman is murdered it is considered a double homicide?
6. “I didn’t mean to get pregnant, it was an accident.”
It was an accident, huh? Whether you claim it was an accident or not, you are now in charge of taking responsibilities for your actions. It was not the child's fault you became pregnant, so why punish him or her?
7. “If the woman is not ready to have a child, she will create an unsafe and unhealthy environment for the child to grow.”
We have foster care, child protective services, etc for a reason. If you need any further information go back to number four, above.
8. “What if the girl dies during childbirth?”
So, basically, what you are telling me is that the woman's life is more important than the baby’s. Does that mean we can start validating people’s existence as more important than others? Does that mean your life is more important than mine?
I will leave you with this, if you can support the Black Lives Matter, Native Lives Matter, and All Lives Matter movements then why do you not support that all lives matter? I'm saying this because an unborn child is still a life, and in that respect their lives must also matter, too.
