A killer headache, queasy stomach, sore muscles - you've been graced with a hangover. Whether you spent the night curled up on the couch with Netflix and a cheap bottle of wine or took too many tequila shots at the bar (no judgment), the next day makes you want never to drink again. There are ways to prevent this horrible feeling, and they're pretty easy to accomplish.
Pre-game:
Before you start drinking, eat foods that are fatty and high in protein. Eat a cup of full-fat yogurt with some shredded coconut and almonds. Foods with higher fat content have been proven to delay the body's absorption of alcohol, and foods that are high in protein break down alcohol and absorb it, keeping it from reaching the bloodstream as quickly. Vitamin C is also proven to help prevent hangovers, so drink a big glass of orange juice.
While you're out:
What you choose to drink is more important than you think. Try to avoid cheaper alcohols because they contain more congeners, the compounds that give liquor its color and flavor, and many turns into toxic aldehydes as they are digested the next day. The more expensive the alcohol, the fewer congeners it contains.
Carbonation is another thing to avoid. Jack and Coke is a good drink to sip, but knocking back a few too many can cause the surface area of the stomach to expand, which means increased alcohol absorption.
Drinking water is more important than people realize. Number one, downing water will keep you from downing the tequila. Number two, it keeps you hydrated because alcohol is very dehydrating. Switch every other drink you have with a glass of water. You'll drink less and feel better in the long run.The morning after:
Keep drinking water and have a glass of juice. The sugar in fruit burns alcohol, and fructose will also restore your blood sugar level. To combat that headache, eat a piece of toast drizzled with honey. Bland carbohydrates will help absorb any alcohol left in your stomach, so you could also try white bread or white rice. Avoid foods high in fiber, which are tougher on your delicate digestive system. To combat more intense nausea, drink some Pepto-Bismol. A Bloody Mary might seem like a good idea, but it will only delay your hangover a little longer.
Stay safe and always make good choices!
