I knew from a young age that I wanted to study abroad. My first couple years of college were amazing. I became involved in scholarship programs, organizations, clubs, and a couple of on-campus jobs. These incredible opportunities distracted me from my original goal of studying abroad.

Until last November..........

I met with my advisor to chat about what classes I need to be taking. Walking into her office with a list of classes I planned on taking, I never expected what she told me. My advisor pulled up my transcripts and asked me if I was planning on graduating early. I never even thought that would be an option, but I was certainly on track to finish schooling quicker than four years. Instead, I asked about studying abroad. It was a perfect fit. I had forgotten about how badly I wanted to go because I met some amazing friends and joined incredible organizations. Yet, study abroad still was an option for me as I head into my senior year.

The next semester I will be in Italy to study art and photography. Over the past seven months since my meeting with my advisor, I have been making preparations for my trip.

Applying for Study Abroad

My application process was fairly simple. I had to answer questions about my GPA, majors, and why I wanted to study abroad. The application didn't take me very long, and within a month I had been approved.

Getting a Passport/ Renewing One

Several years ago I went abroad to Ecuador and Nicaragua. Since I was fifteen when I got my first passport I needed to renew it. My university does passport renewals in the International House. However, getting a passport or renewing one can also be done at your local post office. All I had to do was bring my passport photos taken by Walgreens, my driver's license, my old passport and a payment. Within five weeks I received my new passport in the mail. Even though I got my new passport quickly I suggest doing it as soon as possible, because sometimes it can take months to receive it.

Making Payments

Each month I had another payment towards the trip. If I didn't pay on time they would cancel my spot. Being aware of exactly when I needed to send my school money is highly important.

Buying a Flight Ticket

Students get discounts on plane tickets. I used a site called Student Universe, which is easy to navigate. Within an hour of being on the site, I purchased my ticket. Keep in mind the possibility of buying travel insurance with your ticket. If you purchase this they will cover you if luggage is lost or if you need to cancel your flight.

RFID Blocking Wallets

Believe it or not, thieves have scanners that read your credit card numbers. It is an easy way for someone to hack into your bank account. To avoid this buy a wallet that has RFID blocking technology, making scanning your credit card numbers an impossibility.

Knowing What to Pack

I did some research on what the weather will be like in Italy from August to December in areas near Tuscany. Packing light is essential, so I knowing what to pack is my goal.

Having Little Expectations and Getting Excited

Every good and bad experience I have abroad will help me grow as a person. I am looking forward to all of it with no expectations.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
