Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones But Words Actually Do Hurt

Speak, and you will be heard.

I don’t think there is anything that holds more power than the words we speak with our lips. That old saying “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is definitely false. We probably realized this in the 2nd grade when Becky said something mean like "the color purple is ugly", and we think, “Yeah, that actually did hurt, Becky. I love purple.”

Except when we get older, the words are much more powerful than insulting someone’s favorite color. The new words involve profanity, discrimination, personal attacks, gossip, and any other hurtful thing out there. We like to pretend it doesn’t get to us, and tell ourselves that we are in charge of our own feelings. Which is true, but it’s okay to feel the sting of a hurtful word or a crude comment thrown your way. Words can float around in our minds for years, whether we want them to or not.

The problem is that either someone truly wants to be mean, or, someone doesn’t actually think anyone is listening and therefore doesn’t pay attention to what they’re saying. We’ve all been guilty of both, because we forget. We forget that words hold power.

God spoke the world into existence, He spoke life into all creation. Jesus’ words are written in the color red, and some of the most powerful words are written by fishermen, businessmen, and prisoners. We are all children of God, and we all have power within us because of that. We can either use it for good, or use it to tear down our brothers and sisters.

When a friend makes a mistake, you have two options. You can either scold them and tell them all the things they did wrong, which I am sure they are already aware of, or you can encourage them and show them forgiveness, compassion, and unconditional love. The choice is yours, but don’t forget that either way, those words are powerful.

People remember the words that you speak and write. Those words are heard and seen by more people than you realize, and they impact people more than you know. But again, the choice is yours. Would you rather be remembered for being a light? Or for being someone who only spouts profanity and blasphemy? Someone who brags and boasts? Or somone who is negative or tears others down?

Choose to be the light.

Choose to only speak words of encouragement and love.

Choose to be positive and bright in a world of darkness.

Choose to be humble and don’t brag and let recognition come when it’s deserved.

Choose to lift others up, not tear them down.

Choose your words wisely, because they are powerful.

You never know who is listening.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
