When fellow students ask the generic, "So what's your major?" question, they're often surprised by my answer of Poultry Science. Many people have never heard of it, and even my family was shocked. I often hear jokes about my major and am questioned as to why I would choose to work with chickens for the rest of my life, but what many people fail to realize is, Poultry Science is one of the most growing industries in the world. As if that isn't enough, I'll give you ten more reasons to consider choosing Poultry.
1. Poultry Science Majors enjoy extensive scholarship opportunities.
My entire first year of college was paid for in poultry-related scholarships sponsored by companies eager to bring on new poultry graduates. The amount of scholarship opportunities even for less than A-average students is amazing.
2. You can work anywhere.
Poultry jobs are available globally and right in your back yard. So whether you want to travel the world or stay close to home, there's something for everyone.
3. Poultry is an ever-growing industry filled with opportunities.
The U.S. alone produces nine billion chickens a year and that's not even counting the other poultry aspects of eggs, turkeys, ducks, and quail.
4. Internships are paid.
Poultry internships are typically given during the summer. They are paid competitively with many offering housing allowances as well.
5. Poultry jobs are readily available.
The hiring rate for poultry graduates is close to 100% with many of my class-mates and those who have graduated before me leaving school with two to three job offers. As of right now, with three semesters left of school, I have two job offers.
