The whole point of this article is for everyone to be able to take the time to focus on something positive in the media and within the racial spectrum. Diversity in the entertainment industry may not be at the ideal level, but it is growing. I also want to see who disagrees with me. Some may think that the entertainment industry assists in the separation of races, but I think that it is the best way to give success and opportunity to all communities.
Cognitive dissonance is the state of having inconsistent thoughts beliefs and attitudes. For example, we may say that we support the success and growth of all races, but our actions or beliefs are not consistent with our words. I believe that media such as movies, music, and TV series erases this inconsistency by giving the audience characters that they can relate to that are not always the same race as them. It also widens the diversity of the audience. Therefore, it increases the size of the audience and the monetary income so that the producers, actors, and everyone involved is ultimately more successful because of it.
In a world where being different has not always been accepted, minority communities have always been just that: not accepted, minorities, left out, under represented, and marginalized. I believe that modern media has been able to provide that sense of acceptance. Before, the media did not depict the world in reality. According to media in the past, the multi cultural America that we are so proud of was an all white country led by men. Although many white men might think they rule our world, we all know that this is not a true reflection of our beautiful, colorful world today.
With the diversity among casts, racial slurs and racism cannot be tolerated. Media no longer teaches our youth that these attitudes and actions are okay. Words do hurt, and some words should be left unsaid by everyone. Media instead teaches the youth that all types of interracial relationships are okay. Being biracial is no longer a burden; it is often glorified in the media. minority groups have always been depicted negatively in the media, and I am thrilled to be in the generation that sees the transition that is being made.
Most people will say that the color of their skin does not define them. In many cases, that is true. The color of your skin, and both the positive and negative stereotypes attached to it, do not define you. In more ways than one though, the color of your skin does define you. The color of your skin usually can determine your religion and belief system and cultural identity. Those are the things that define you and make your ethnicity different from the rest.
We should all embrace our race and cultural background no matter how small of a minority it may be. We have impressionable youth to impress and great grandparents to prove wrong.
