It's been around for decades now, with its catch phrases like "D'oh" and even its own ride in Universal Studios, The Simpsons is an icon in American pop culture. While on a typical Hulu binge watching spree, I began to sit up and pay closer to attention to the goofy cartoon. Is it possible they are predicting our future as a nation? As crazy as it sounds, it seems like they are and here's why.
1. Three-Eyed Fish
This one's pretty goofy, but true. In a 1990 episode, Bart catches a three-eyed fish. Over two decades later, in 2011, a real three-eyed fish was found the Argentinian coast line. Weird, right?!
2. Rigged Voting Machines
In an episode in 2008, Homer's vote for Obama was changed to McCain due to an error on the voting machine. In 2012, voting machines across the country were glitching and votes were being casted incorrectly. Another strange prediction by The Simpsons.
3. The Smart Watch
The Simpsons even managed to predict one of the newest gadgets, the Smart Watch. In an episode in 1996, Lisa is transformed to the future and her future fiancee communicates through his watch. I wonder if that's where Samsung and Apple got their inspiration from?
4. Autocorrect
The Simpsons actually managed to predict the hassle we all know as Autocorrect. In season six, Nelson's gang of bullies typed into their phone "Beat Up Martin" but the phone changed it to "Eat up, Martha". Little did they know, this would become a typical problem in the 21st century.
5. FarmVille
You can thank The Simpsons for those pesky "Farmville" invites you receive on Facebook every three seconds. Back in 1998, the kids of Springfield were psyched to receive a farm simulator game. Ten years later, and no one is psyched about it. Thanks a lot, Springfield.
6. FaceTime
In 1995, The Simpsons aired an episode where in the future, Marge communicated with others through a video on her phone. It was high tech for its time and futuristic. A modern day FaceTime app may be to blame?
7. Wrecking Ball
2013 was the year of Miley Cyrus's highly controversial "Wrecking Ball" music video. Why wasn't it controversial when Homer did the same thing back in 1994 or again in The Simpsons Movie in 2007?
8. Lemon Tree
Once upon a time, some mean kids from Shelbyville came to Springfield to steal their beloved lemon tree. History repeated itself in Houston in 2013, where someone also stole someone's lemon tree out of their front yard. I guess The Simpsons is good at predicting future crimes!
9. Horse Meat Scandal
In 1994, news broke in Springfield about Springfield Elementary using horse meat in thr cafeteria. It was a huge scandal and was talked about in an episode in 1994. Later, in 2013, The UK Burger King was in the same boat, facing a horse meat scandal as well!
Freaked out, yet? What will The Simpsons predict next?
