Many people are not into politics, so this article will summarize the biggest headline in the political world at the moment for those who do not check the news every day.
The Alabama special election this past week has made history. Republican Roy Moore, who was supported by Donald Trump, was defeated by Democrat Doug Jones, and for the first time in 25 years, a Democrat has been elected to the Senate from the state of Alabama. The Republicans hold 51 seats in the Senate and the Democrats now hold 49 seats.
Why was it such a big win?
This is a major victory for both Doug Jones and the entire Democratic Party for several reasons. This seat was previously held by Republican Jeff Sessions, who is now the U.S. attorney general. This election gave the Democrats one more seat in the Republican majority Senate.
The hope of a Democrat majority in 2018 is now more attainable due to this win. The fact that a Democrat won in a heavily red state is surprising and gives hope to Democrats to dominate the polls next November.
How did Roy Moore lose?
After weeks of controversy, there are a few main reasons as to why Roy Moore was put at a disadvantage before Tuesday even began.
First off, the biggest downfall of Moore was the endless child molestation accusations from Moore's past that continued to unravel towards the end of his campaign. Moore denied these claims of sexual misconduct and claimed the women were lying. However, many people believe the women who came forward were telling the truth.
Next, Roy Moore believes homosexuals are criminals and called homosexuality a “destructive lifestyle". Having these beliefs and vocalizing them was detrimental to Moore and his campaign because in our progressive society many people are accepting of homosexuality.
Another negative aspect of Moore's campaign was when he was asked by an African American when America was last 'great.' He replied with
“I think it was great at the time when families were united – even though we had slavery – they cared for one another…. Our families were strong, our country had a direction."
The fact that Moore's ideal time period involved slavery enraged many voters. These are three major factors that contributed to Roy Moore losing the senate race.
How did Doug Jones win?
Aside from Moore's downfall, there are several other factors that contributed to Jones' victory on actual election day. One of the biggest contributions to his victory was that many African Africans, especially women, came out to vote for Jones. Ninety-eight percent of black women voted for Jones, and this was vital to the Democrat victory.
In addition, according to exit polls, 74% of voters who describe themselves with moderate views voted for Jones. This is a rare result for the historically conservative state of Alabama.
Lastly, Moore did not receive as many white rural votes as he was expected to. These outcomes from the voters led to a Jones victory for the Senate seat.
Those are the key factors of Roy Moore's defeat for those of you who tend to be disinterested in politics. Despite Doug Jones being a Democrat in a predominantly red state, he was still able to pull out a win against Roy Moore.
Donald Trump endorsed Roy Moore despite the accusations. However, the morning after the election Trump tweeted that 'we need to put up GREAT Republican candidates'. Apparently, Roy Moore was not up to the president's standards of GREATNESS. Maybe next election.
