Politics As Usual

If you don't talk about it, will it go away?

Politics As Usual
Shift

I’ve talked to a few people over the past couple weeks about presidential candidates, different views on foreign policy, and the government’s take on climate change. These topics are not talked about during a normal, every day conversation because politics tends to be a sensitive topic. You never really know if you’re talking to a right wing conservative or a devout liberal and you certainly don’t want to ask. Why? Because politics is a touchy subject – no one really wants to talk about it due to the vast opinions and views. One day, you might be talking to an acquaintance, who has potential to become a close friend and you find out their political views differ from yours dramatically. You know what happens after that? You never speak to them again and when you see them post something on Facebook, they will always be known as 'that girl who supports Ben Carson' or 'that guy who agrees with Hillary Clinton.' Maybe they’re one of those people who believe in building a wall to keep immigrants out, maybe they believe planned parenthood should not be defunded.

To get to the point, no one talks about politics. It’s some unspoken rule. People treat politics as if it’s the fine china your mom didn’t want you to touch (you seriously never touch it) and it is a problem. No one talks about it, but yet everyone wants change? How do we go about that if no one wants to talk about the elephant in the room. We cannot even answer why in the world Donald Trump is trying to build a wall? What will this wall actually accomplish? Is there no one else genuinely worried about the future of the United States of America? Has anyone seen the candidates we have to chose from? I’m pretty sure Deez Nuts had a better stance on foreign policy than any one of them.

A point that I also need to mention, while conversing with many different people, some have actually told me that they, “Don’t get involved with politics” and "They want nothing to do with it." Which often leaves me confused, if you “Don’t get involved with politics” what do you get involved in? How are you not concerned with what Lawmakers, Senators, and people who have actual power above us are doing? Do you think the Constitution is going to protect you that much? Us? I don't know how anyone can leave politics to only the politicians (they are seriously sneaky snakes). I am not judging anyone, but if you want to see a better world, you have to at least know what’s going on in it. Get involved, talk about it, who cares if you lose a few acquaintances? Who wants to be friends with someone who supports a Black republican anyway? But this is merely just my opinion.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
