People often like to give politicians crap for the things that they don't do. Our elected officials often make big promises in order to get elected and never fall through with them. I understand why people are often upset with politicians, but I think it's time that we truly celebrate all that they do. They've done some miraculous things, and I think they deserve to be celebrated. Here are a few of the great things that politicians have done in our country.
Deny Climate Change:
Why should scientific evidence provided by trusted experts cause you to believe that the planet is "heating up" due to "man caused" climate change? I'm proud that we have elected officials (that we elected) that have the strength and courage to deny facts, statistics, common sense, and decency. I mean what would happen if we decided to be more environmentally friendly and it turns out that climate change actually isn't real? We would have done all that good for the planet just for the sake of being good and not because of the ever increasingly urgent fear of extinction? Gross. Why should our politicians listen to Al Gore...or the entire scientific community?
Limit Women's Access to Legal Abortions:
Conservatives, the true American heroes, have always held the belief that government should be small and that people should essentially be allowed to do whatever they want as long as they aren't hurting other people. They strongly believe in freedom (which I'm thoroughly convinced is one of their favorite words after all, Obama is a Kenyan, Muslim, Socialist, in no particular order). However, they feel inclined to step in on the whole "freedom" thing and make it nearly impossible for women to get abortions. How great is that? They're all for personal freedom, unless you're a pregnant victim of sexual assault, in which case they've made it nearly impossible for you to obtain an abortion depending on where you live. I'm so happy our politicians are doers when it comes to abortion and don't help to fight against victim-blaming, increase and expand sexual education, and attempt to understand that getting an abortion isn't an easy decision and maybe try to be supportive or at least understanding of what can be a life-changing process.
Treat The LGBT Community As Lessers:
Just because they're people that are equally capable of love, doesn't mean we should let them get married or I don't know, be nice to them. Thank God we have politicians who throw aside the separation of church and state and just hate the gay community. It's not like that Jesus fellow mentioned should love one another any how. Even if he did, it doesn't mean that our elected officials representing the entire population of the United States of America, a country that prides itself on giving every citizen an equal opportunity, should treat everyone the same. Our politicians have fought long and hard to keep equal rights away from people based on loving or being attracted to other people of the same sex or gender.
Value The Second Amendment Over The Lives of Children:
Most countries would implement some form of gun control after any mass shooting (or a few), but here in America we believe in excess. Our politicians have witnessed school shooting after school shooting, and still won't even place a ban on semi-automatic assault rifles. Wouldn't it be awful if we had wimpy officials who placed the sanctity of human life (especially the life of a child) over a piece of legislation that was passed in 1789.
We need to stop criticizing politicians for all that they don't do and look at what they do. Then, maybe we would realize that a bottle of ketchup could govern better than half of them.
