Political correctness has not ruined the 2016 election. In fact, it is not ruined at all. If anything, the source of turmoil would be the political INcorrectness portrayed by a particular candidate.
In reality, politics should focus around the quality of a candidate's platform-- facts and plans mixed with determination. Unfortunately, theatrics are also a part of politics. It's not all about facts and plans when the majority of the voting population has no idea what the difference between fiscal and monetary policy is. It's not all about facts and plans when publicity stunts are pulled, kissing babies, shaking hands and writing checks. It's not all about facts and plans when the facts are muddled with lies and the plans go against the core values for which America stands.
I've heard countless people, friends, coworkers, teachers, who say they are going into this election not caring for whom they are going to vote. That both candidates will screw over the country. That this election has boiled down to picking the lesser of two evils, and honestly, that last phrase? Nothing infuriates me more.
Because this election is NOT about picking the lesser of two evils. It's about voting for the candidate who is the most qualified for the position, who has vowed to protect and ensure the values upon which America was founded- predominantly equality. It's about voting for the candidate who has shown dedication to the United States of America and its values for decades. Can you say that Donald Trump fits into any of the aforementioned phrases?
Donald Trump has identified as a Republican, somewhat ironically I find. Curiously enough, he parallels Richard Nixon's "Silent Majority" epithet with his being the "Vocal Minority." If anything has ruined the election of 2016, it is the exposure that there exists a (loud) population (thankfully not a majority yet) that adamantly identifies with Donald Trump.
An audacious population that enjoys freedoms fought for by soldiers who suffered beyond imagination and are then subsequently insulted-- referencing Donald Trump's insult to Prisoners of War.
A population who stands with someone who demeans women, judging them for their looks and not their actions or intellect. Name-calling them "pigs" and "slobs" as if this were a student-body election in elementary school, backtracking against progress that women strived for for decades and have made to precisely NOT be judged for how they look.
A population who discriminates, who is prejudiced, in the name of "national security." Who is are prepared to vote someone into office who becomes unstable at the slightest Tweet, in under 140 characters, to be the Commander in Chief of the greatest army in the world.
The list can go on and on.
So next time, when you tell me, or anyone, that you are going into the polls this November voting for the "lesser of two evils," you are not. There is a clear and competent choice in this election, and if you're not with her this year, you aren't for America either.
