Gotta Catch ‘Em All!! That's right, the global phenomenon that has shocked the world! The first app that has ever convinced us to get off the couch and actually walk, ride and drive to discover the world around us. It's unbelievable, who knew that all it took to get us active would be little cartoon characters.
Nintendo has not only successfully created the first teenager health app, it's also created a new formula for printing money. In a matter of days, their stock has risen by the double digits percentage wise. People in the game are spending hours and hours outside together, meeting new people and enjoying the world around them.
So what happened? How did one app transform an entire generation?
Here's my theory. I think that this app first off creates an adventure combined with competition. In other words, in order to stay on top, you have to put the most distance and time in. So we are all driven by our natural competitiveness. I would even argue that people barely notice the healthy, outdoors side of "Pokémon Go." It is about setting and achieving goals that are better than the person next to us.
Moreover, the popularity of the brand I believe has been a huge contributor. A game and series that has been around for over twenty years and counting. It plays off of the original generation who grew into it and applies to the next generation beyond. They understood the technology and where culture has been lately and found the perfect recipe to make this app number one.
On top of all that, just the aspect that requires people to meet up and explore creates this cohesiveness. You feel a part of something bigger and that you can make a difference no matter how big or small. Suddenly we all found a way to belong, whether it be on team Mystic, team Instinct or the most powerful and battle ready, team Valor! The creators essentially built a way for all of us to come together and knowingly or unknowingly form alliances, challenge the norm, be the best and given us the adventure to live.As crazy or odd as this might sound the facts don't lie. Over 5 percent of the U.S. population has already downloaded it and that's in less than two weeks after it's release. It even has shown to help local businesses especially those near or at Pokéstops drawing the gamer and business communities closer and bring new life to old and forgotten places. I will be honest and acknowledge the fact that this is also creating some issue with law enforcement and people getting injured. However, nothing is perfect and this game might just be the Flappy Bird of 2016!
Now go! Be the trainers you always wanted to be!
