Poetry On Odyssey: When You Take Something For Granted, You Steal Its Beauty

Because even after your awful day, here stands that beautiful tulip...

24
Tulips

Once you take something for granted, it begins to lose its beauty. Don't let the precious things in your life wilt. You will soon enough regret forgetting it in the first place.

The Granted

You are given a beautiful blossoming tulip

Gratitude drowns your heart and you faithfully water it each day

You turn it toward the window of your room so that the sun may wash the tulip in its warmth and nutrition

You watch it grow tall and elegant, pleasuring you with its vibrant allure of bright red

The stem strengthens more by the day, supporting the petals

You come home from a stressful day and collapse onto your bed; your strained muscles loosen as you see the beautiful sight of your tulip

Because even after your awful day, here stands that beautiful tulip

Tall and strong

After a few days, you begin to find other beautiful things in life

You buy new clothes that make you look flattering and glimmering to the eye

You receive the new handbag you've been eyeing for months at the store

Your friend takes you out to see the new movie that is all the rage

Day after day you come home without a single thought of your tulip

Your eyes fail to falter from the new glories that have been introduced into your life

What you don't realize has been introduced is the demise of something you once thought was beautiful

Now the walls of your room watch what your eyes have long forgotten

You're onto bigger and better things

The sky peering in from the shades of your window watch in pity as the tulip longs for a sip of cool water to refresh it from the abundance of heat from the sun

You never remembered to turn your tulip away from the sun while you were occupied with other things

All the while you are proud that in your possession is a beautiful tulip that will be pleasing to the eye when you have encountered a horrible day

The tulip is sure to pick you back up

Slowly, petal by petal, the life is drained out of the once beautiful flower

The leaves are the last to fall around the base of the vase

The vase, which once held residency to perhaps the most beautiful plant you've seen, now sends its regards to you

The vase is now the tulip's final resting place

You come home from a stressful day and collapse onto your bed, your strained muscles loosen as you imagine the beautiful sight of your tulip

The only sight your eyes are met by is the wilted remains of a once brilliant red

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
