The Poetry Of Skin Color

A poetic reminder to see not solely with they eyes.

My skin is a pale and freckled reminder that it does not define my character. I’ve been filling in boxes my whole life with “white.” Why? I hear of race, but where is the finish line? I choose the term “other” nowadays and when it asks to specify, I say “human.” Do we forget or continue to stay ignorant to the fact that the word “race” is a term created and used to separate and discriminate ourselves from each other? Do we forget that we all come from each other, connected like brothers? I think we do. But we have to fight to not stay that way. Embrace the mutations of what we have evolved into from the first humans in Africa. Segregate the delusions from the truth. When we have grown up on being told that you are white and you are black and you are brown, silence is the only sound we cannot make. As if “pass me the skin colored marker” is okay to say. Maybe it is easy for me to say, but we have to stop defining so much of our worth and who we are or who they are based off of something no one got to choose- skin color. Baseless judgements as if the shoe size I wore would be a precursor to my personality. Isn't that similar to skin color? Ignorance is a disease but it is not incurable. No more than the hair on my head makes me a better or worse person does the color someone’s skin. Pure toxicity says that it defines who I am, where I will go, what I will be. Maybe I have had a more privileged life that doesn’t force me to look at the mirror and wonder why. Why was I born with this certain pigmentation?

Killing each other in the streets with guns and with words - thoughts control a universe. Darker skin or lighter skin doesn’t mean you will be more prone to crime, it’s your insides, how you have grown. We are all the same with an x-ray. We should change the slums and the way we use guns. Money says you can survive if you have drugs and lies. Educate to eradicate and give life with love, hate destroys anything that can bloom. Fix our thoughts from quick judgements and absolutes. Quit defining character off of an organ only meant to see physicality.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
