A PNM's Inner Thoughts

Because let's be honest, we all felt this way as we entered our first house during sorority recruitment.

A PNM's Inner Thoughts

Here at the University of Arizona, sorority recruitment begins a week before school. That being said, I am always the first one of my friends to leave Chicago and fly back to Arizona for the upcoming year. While I love college, what always gets me is when my friends from home ask what sorority recruitment entails. You see, there is truly no good way to explain it. It honestly is just something that you have to go through, on both sides, in order to understand. The only people that are more confused about what sorority recruitment entails than my friends, though, are the incoming freshman going through it for their first time.

I remember going through sorority recruitment like it was yesterday. After two years in my sorority, I can honestly say it was one hundred percent worth it. However, that doesn't make recruitment any less scary or strange. Listed below are 30 thoughts that go through a PNM's (potential new member) head as they go to their first house during recruitment.

1. Oh my god, what are they screaming at me?

2. Oh.. that's a song...

3. How are they all bouncing in sync like that?

4. How tall are those heels?

5. I wonder if anyone's going to fall while they bounce...

6. Oh crap, the lines moving.. I'm getting closer to going inside.

7. AH, one more person until I'm up!!!!

8. Okay, okay... I'll be fine, just keep walking and don't trip...

9. Wait... if I think about tripping, am I more or less likely to fall on my face?

10. Okay, I'm walking into the house.. so far, so good.

11. Wow, this girl's greeting to me was super enthusiastic.

12. Do I want water? I've been standing in one hundred degree heat, of course I do!

13. But does it look bad if I take the water?

14. Screw it, I don't care, I'm taking the water anyways.

15. Keep walking... you won't trip, just walk slowly.

16. Thank god, I'm finally sitting down.

17. Crap, I'm sitting down now, that means I have to speak!!

18. Just breathe.. I can do this.. I talk to people all the time.

19. Oh god.. she just asked me a question and I wasn't even listening...

20. Is it bad if I ask if she can repeat that?

21. She's just staring at me.. I need to ask her to repeat that..

22. Okay, she didn't seem to judge me too badly for asking.

23. I hope she likes me.

24. I wonder if she thinks I'm nice and funny.

25. I think I'm nice and funny, I bet she does too.

26. Wow, this girl is really nice...this isn't too bad.

27. *quick glance around the house to see what it looks like*

28. Okay, I can do this!

29. Wait... I still have eleven more houses left.

30. AND NOW IM NERVOUS ALL OVER AGAIN.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
