Perks Of Living In A Single

Sometimes one isn't the loneliest number

A lot of people think that living in a stand-alone single is boring and lonely. I'm not going to lie, sometimes I do wish that I had a roommate or a suitemate to hang out with and talk to. But overall, the freedom and privacy that comes with living in a single is freaking amazing. I can do pretty much anything I want whenever I want, and it's awesome. I don't mind living alone because I make it fun for myself. Here are a just couple things that I love about living on my own.

1. I can keep my room as clean (or as messy) as I see fit

Okay, maybe I do need someone who'll make sure that I keep all my crap in one place. But it's way more fun being able to throw every item I own on the floor of my room without having anyone around to tell me anything.

2. I have a bathroom all to myself

I don't have to deal with other girl's makeup going all over the bathroom sink. I just have to deal with my own. If I want to re-enact the first act of The Phantom of the Opera by myself in the shower, I can. If I want to give myself a dramatic, motivational speech in the mirror right before my 8 AM, I can. If I want to camp in my bathroom for 5 hours attempting to perfect a Willam Belli look, I can. And there ain't nothin' anyone can do to stop me.

3. I can dance whenever I want to, however I want to

Like Tina Belcher, I feel the need to move my body in ungodly ways. Unlike Tina Belcher, I do have some shame (but not a lot of it). I'll whip, nae nae, and dab like it's no one's business, and there won't be anyone around to tell me how much I suck at it. Even if there were other people around, they wouldn't be telling me anything I didn't already know.

4. I can watch and listen to stuff without having to put earphones in

And I can scream and shout unnecessary comments at my laptop screen if someone in the show that I'm binge watching on Netflix is acting a fool. If I can't get mad at the screen and express my frustration fully, I might as well not even be watching the show.

5. I have my own washer and dryer

I'm not sure if other universities put washers and dryers in their stand-alone singles, but this is definitely a perk that I have at mine. I don't have to wait for someone to take their clothes out of the washer or bother with putting a guy's laundry on top of the dryer just so that I can use it. On top of that, I don't have to pay for my laundry either.

6. I can come home late without bothering anyone

I don't have to worry about waking anyone up if I come home and get ready for bed at 2 in the morning. I can turn all my lights on, blow dry my hair, and play music out loud before I go to sleep because there's no one around to be bothered by it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
