8 PERKS OF BEING THE OLDEST CHILD

Being the oldest child can come with some negatives. We are expected to maintain high expectations and set a good example for our younger siblings to follow. Everything always seems to be your fault, and no matter how right you are, you're expected to be the bigger person and let it go. With that being said, there are some good things that come with it. Here are 8 perks of being the oldest child.

1. More privileges.

When your the oldest, you get to do more. You're the first to have your curfew extended, your bedtime removed, and to start driving. These things can cause your younger siblings to complain that it's "not fair", which is just another plus for being the oldest.

2. More baby pictures.

Since you came first, naturally your parents were more interested in saving memories and recording your firsts. As more kids come along, they get less and less excited about these moments.

3. Being in charge.

Arguably the best part of being the oldest child, when your parents leave and you get all the authority. There's nothing like telling your younger sibling they can't do something, and them actually not being able to do it.

4. Having your own stuff.

When you have older siblings, a lot of the toys, clothes, and other things you have used to belong to them. Being the oldest, that's not the case. Everything you get is brand new and that's something to be happy about.

5. Giving your siblings advice.

As the oldest you've experienced more in life than your siblings, giving you more knowledge. With this wisdom, you can help your siblings make good choices as well as sway them from making any mistakes you've already made.

6. Not being compared.

While your parents still expect things from you, they aren't comparing you to anyone. Not having siblings that come before you means you get to set the standards and do what you want to do.

7. Protecting your siblings.

We love to tease and make fun of our little siblings, but we're the only ones who are allowed to do it. If anyone even attempts to be mean to them, we're there to put a stop to it.

8. Being a role model.

Since you're the oldest, your siblings are going to look up to you. Although it can sometimes get annoying when they start to ask for all the clothes and toys you have, it can be nice as well. They watch everything you do and attempt to mirror it because you're their hero. Setting a good example for your little siblings to follow is, in my opinion, the best part about being the oldest.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
