People Are 'Yakking' Everywhere

UCSB, Under Yakattack

People Are 'Yakking' Everywhere

Within the past couple of weeks there has been a quite a lot of ‘Yakking’ going around the UCSB campus. It’s been spreading, and to be honest things are looking a little scary.

Symptoms include lack of motivation, major procrastination, and a decrease in class attendance. There has been an outbreak, yet we are still fighting to find a cure. What will we do? The future of UCSB is in your hands!

**Refreshes Yak feed…

Yik Yak has exploded tremendously on college campuses around the nation, but none have quite the same Yak feed as UCSB. If you haven’t already experienced Yik Yak for yourself, I strongly advise you think twice. Once you tap the Yak, there’s no going back. Trust me, I tried. If you’re one of those people who isn’t currently in the sac with the Yak let me tell you a little more about this new app everyone’s literally dying to have—let’s not mention last night's reactions to the ‘yassacre’.

Yik Yak wasn’t always hyped up to be the next Facebook or Twitter; if you can even call that an accurate comparison. The app boasts an anonymous feed that contains everything from the latest hook-up gossip to some of the funniest things you’ll see throughout your day. The app features an endless feed of all the ‘Yaks’ that have been posted in the last hour.

Users are allowed to either up-vote something they like or down-vote something they hate. Beware if two or more users deem your post as inappropriate, your Yak is removed from the pack. Unfortunately, users are only allowed to post to the feed in their area but may Peek into other schools’ feeds. You may get annoyed at times, but never will you experience boredom when riding the Yak,

This app has only been around for about a year now, and the Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers who founded this explosive new way of procrastination deserve some major props for bringing innovation to the forever-growing world of social media.

Like Twitter, you are given 200 characters to say whatever you like. Many have even referred to Yik Yak as the anonymous Twitter feed for your area. We can only expect the founders and brothers of Kappa Alpha to mold this into something nobody has seen before.

*Yik Yak Presents Ride The Yak Fall Campus Tour 2014*

“This fall, Yik Yak tours the west coast to bring the Yak to 36 different college campuses. Trekking in a 45 ft. bus, Yik Yak will take over college campuses across 29 different cities and 5 different states to show everyone how to get funky and ride the Yak (literally). So get ready for the ultimate college tour, full of amazing sights, sounds and Yaktivities coming to a college campus near you.”

Stated directly on their website as a promotion, they are visiting various campuses across the West coast and have already made stops at UC Davis, Cal State San Francisco, San Jose State, and a few others in Nor-Cal. You can guarantee they will be stopping in our very own Isla Vista.

Keep a look our for Sherpa, their 45ft-long tour bus! During the event, the Yak will be making rounds around campus to meet, greet, and take photos. There will also be Pedi-cabs, which will take you to and from class. They are visiting each campus as a surprise, only posting on their website the week of each visit.

Stay posted and don’t forget to ride the Yak. If you’re new to Yik Yak as many of us were not to long ago, I have a feeling those Yakarma points are going to come into play as Sherpa rolls through Henley Gate. And one last thing, don’t forget to ride the Yak!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
