College, or basically any post-secondary education, is a time in everyone's lives where they are free to express themselves and to indulge in the endless realm of their passions, which will further lead them to their future careers. It is completely different from any other form of education because you get to select the classes you want to take (most of the time), and you have freedom to create an educational experience that caters to your lifestyle and your endeavors.
Something that truly makes me sick to my stomach is when college students begin to ridicule other college students for their choices with their major. Why are people so concerned what other people pursue? Why do they think it's OK to voice their opinion on how they think their major is a dumb choice? It isn't your life, it's theirs.
I often see this form of degradation on social media sites, particularly the app "Yik Yak," where people are allowed to anonymously post their thoughts and opinions, which leads basically a bottomless pit of choice phrases to make someone feel less about themselves.
I almost always see someone post on Yik Yak about how "mass communications majors are stupid" or "I hope art majors know that they aren't going to get anywhere in life." This makes me absolutely sick to my stomach.
Are people forgetting the ideals of "work hard in what you love, and the money will follow?" Sure, the American economy is not at it's highest point right now, but that doesn't mean that people who pursue these majors won't be successful? Just because people seem to always express that "STEM" jobs are the way to a successful life doesn't mean the non-STEM majors won't be successful either.
Coming from a person who has multiple very close friends pursuing mass communications and arts majors, this really upsets me. I have yet to meet one non-STEM major who hasn't been successful in the field they pursued or a related one. As long as you work hard, you can be successful and pursue anything that you want.
I feel that it should be OK for anyone to pursue what they are passionate about at such a crucial moment in their lives. When someone gets older, it becomes harder and harder to continue doing what they love if they don't study that field in post-secondary education.
At the end of the day, you should do what's going to make you the happiest. I'd personally rather be doing something I love and not make as much money than do something that makes a lot of money but makes me want to die on the inside.
