Tucked beneath the colorful awnings lining the Downtown Arts District peacefully rests Paz Studios. With a crowd assembling at its doorstep, it is apparent that this one stop shop for pilates, yoga, and barre is a community favorite.
I had been hunting for a new yoga studio to regularly attend this year when I stumbled upon Paz. I knew I wanted a studio that offered a variety of classes at a low price with instructors that lead thoughtful and demanding workouts. I wanted to learn, grow, sweat, and smile on a college student budget.
Walking into Paz I explained to the instructor, Elliott Watlington, that I wasn't sure if I wanted to commit to buying a package prior to sampling a class. To this he looked up from his iPad and his eyes met mine.
"You're going to like class," stated Watlington, the instructor at Paz Studios. "Trust me, if you like yoga, you're going to like class."
Located at N. Trade Street, Paz Studios is quickly becoming a popular exercise hot spot for Wake Forest students. By offering 30 classes weekly, including different variations of yoga, core barre, and pilates, students are finding time to get off campus and get on their mats.
"I love that it challenges you," says Ashley Hamati, a senior at Wake Forest and Paz Studio regular ever since her freshman year. "I have left class so rejuvenated, but have woken up the next day extremely sore."
Watlington's Hot Power Vinyasa class is one of the most popular classes offered. Based on the Ashtanga yoga tradition, this class focuses on strength and flexibility with temperatures in the low 90's.
"The music is hella groovy, but not distracting." Hamati says. "It puts you in the perfect trance to attain mediation and mindfulness. The heat is an added bonus."
Amidst the everyday stressors and pressures of a college student, it's important for young adults to tend to their minds in order to cultivate a positive lifestyle. No matter where you practice, keep your heart and mind open to trying new things.
"Every practice is different," Hamati says. "It makes you addicted to it and eager to continue to challenge yourself and instill confidence in your body's incredible abilities."
