To those who have never been a member of the Greek community, it all looks like one big party. TV shows and movies like; The House Bunny, Neighbors, Greek, and Animal House have helped to create myths and stereotypes about those of us involved with Greek life. It's time us sorority women and fraternity men come clean and finally accept that these "myths" are, in fact, true.
1. I pay for my friends
This is the most common of all "myths" about Greek life. So you decided to go to a college that few or none of your friends are attending? Why join a small organization to make 10 close friends that costs maybe $20 when you can pay hundreds (or thousands) of dollars to have 100 friends?
2. All we do is party
Absolutely. Every night of the week one can find us all at the local college bar or our favorite fraternity house. You know what they say, "It isn't alcoholism until you graduate."
3. We don’t care about academics
If you read the previous truth then this one makes sense. Who has the time to study with all the partying that needs to be done? It's not like we have GPA requirements or anything. That would be crazy.
4. We only hang out with people in our sorority/fraternity
You have all of the friends you need in your sorority/fraternity, so why bother trying to make friends in another house? If you do then the rest of your sisters will for sure resent you since we are all stuck up and hateful human beings.
5. You have to be rich
If you don't drive a Range Rover and have a closet full of Lilly Pulitzer why are you even joining a sorority?
6. It’s a “white” thing
There is obviously no diversity when it comes to Greek life because we are all closed-minded and don't like to be seen with others who do not look like us.
7. The only way to be accepted in your sorority/fraternity is through hazing
Hazing is the most important aspect of Greek life because it shows how much you truly want to be friends with these people that you are spending thousands of dollars to hang out with. If you aren't hazed how will you ever know the true value of your sisterhood/brotherhood?
8. All sorority girls look the same
Literally every sorority girl is tall, skinny, blonde, and tan. There is no room for brunettes or short girls or pale girls or other races and ethnicities or larger girls because then it's like we would have nothing in common.
