As I watched teenagers from Parkland High School stand up against an ageist world and proclaim their defiance and support for every child's right to safety, the words "Never Again" resonated in my heart.
I'm reminded of more than 20 children who were murdered in Sandy Hook, whose voices were snatched before they could even be nurtured, of the inaction of our Congress in the face of child slaughter. I'm reminded of our deplorable inaction and failure to provide justice to our most innocent, our most vulnerable, and the words "Never Again" resonate in my heart.
I'm reminded of the Pulse Night shooting, in which LGBT people who initially gathered together as a community were killed in the name of homophobia and violence as a gunman rampaged on. I'm reminded of how quickly those who died became a statistic rather than a story, their lives remembered as victimhoods rather than journeys, and the words "Never Again" resonate in my heart.
I'm reminded of how easily these people lost their lives and how easily the gunmen obtained their weapons of destruction designed to kill. I'm reminded of the grief, the silencing and the repetitive cycle that our politics has become, fueled by partisan squabbles rather than a desire to protect its citizens. I'm reminded of those lost and their rights to safety, to protection, to liberty and life itself.
I'm reminded of all those we have lost, and that number should not grow. Parkland should not have happened. Parkland should not have become another statistic. But, Parkland should be the last in America's shameful tale of perpetual slaughter.
Enough is enough. Never again. Never again. Never again.
