So, your daughter is considering Greek Life. I know what’s probably going through your mind: crazy parties, wild fraternity boys, and underage drinking. You decide that there is NO WAY your little princess is participating in such activities.
Well, it’s time you learn the truth about what it means to be in a sorority.
1. Sororities have philanthropic missions.
During recruitment, your daughter is going to learn about the different philanthropies that each sorority supports. They fight things like pediatric cancer, domestic violence, and self-esteem issues in girls, to name a few.
Encourage your daughter to include this in her criteria as she considers her future home in Greek Life. She will participate in events to raise money for her specific philanthropy all year round!

2. Sororities have GPA requirements.
Despite the stereotypical idea that Greek Life is for partying, almost all colleges and universities have GPA requirements for students who want to participate in recruitment.
The sorority your daughter joins will have their own specific GPA requirements, placing girls on probation when they don’t meet them. Many will also have mandatory weekly study hours.
3. Sororities are extremely useful for networking.
Sororities are comprised of girls with many different backgrounds, majors, and interests. Joining such a diverse organization is a great way to learn about opportunities on campus like student organizations, part-time jobs, and internships.
HINT: Alumnae love to seek out sisters in local chapters for job opportunities before and after graduation!
4. Sororities have endless leadership opportunities.
Within a sorority, there are dozens of elected and appointed positions. Girls are encouraged to be more than just members, whether it be simply joining a committee, or running for chapter president! People forget that sororities are like businesses with budgets, event planning, recruiting, and public relations!
5. That “sisterhood” bond we talk about…it’s real.
When your daughter receives a bid, she has instantly gained anywhere from 10 to 200 sisters who are ready in mere seconds if she needs help.
It’s them she’s going to call when that creepy guy won’t leave her alone, or when she needs a ride home at two in the morning. Sorority girls NEVER abandon a sister. Having so many girls she can rely on should make you more comfortable with her being away from home!
