I've owned a dog for most of my life and I can definitely say that it's been one of the best things one can do. Owning a dog teaches responsibility, ownership, and helps future parents learn how to care for something.

Dogs are absolutely fantastic animals and the dog-owner community is huge. Raising a dog can be hard, but also very rewarding. Every owner will be able to relate to these points.

1. You always have your dog to snuggle with.

Sometimes after a long day, all you want to do is cuddle. Dogs love to cuddle and they keep you warm, too.

2. They're always excited to see you.

When you walk in the door, you automatically get attacked by a ball of fur with legs.

3. They don't talk back or argue with you.

You can say anything and they won't. They'll just continue to look at you like you're the best thing in the world.

4. They keep all your secrets.

No matter how weird or gross or awful it is, they won't tell a soul and it's comforting knowing they won't.

5. You get exercise with them.

Taking them for a walk or playing fetch with them is good for their health, but it's also good for yours. It stretches your muscles and reenergizes you.

6. You have a life-long companion.

Dogs can live up to 15 years. They're willing to be with you until the very end.

7. They can tell when you're sad and try to make you feel better.

They'll bring you their favorite toys, treats, and things around the house to make you feel better. Or they'll just lay with you.

8. They're Insanely adorable.

They're cute and they know it.

9. Because of #8, they make great wingmen.

When you're walking your dog in the park or taking them to the vet and someone talks to you, that's a great opportunity to get to know the person. Even if it's not going to lead to a relationship, you can bond over your love of dogs.

10. Dogs will love you no matter what.

From baths to vet visits, from nail clipping to loud noises at parties, they will continue to love you.

11. They can ease anxiety and nerves.

Dogs are GREAT stress relievers. Playing with and petting a dog is a major mood booster. There's a reason why offices and schools bring dogs in to play with during a rough week or during exams. They're also great service animals!

12. Pups are so soft and fluffy!

They make great pillows and, depending on the size of the dog, great blankets too.

13. They keep your toes warm.

They like to curl up by your feet and provide great heating. Until it gets too hot and you have to move them.

14. You'll never have to be alone.

In the shower, on the toilet, doing homework, sleeping, cooking, and everything else is done with your dog whether you like it or not.

15. Dogs miss you when you leave.

Their big, sad eyes stare out the window as they watch you leave the house once again.

16. They're protective of you.

If any other dog comes around you or your house, they become jealous.

17. They make messes, but when they get caught, their faces are adorable.

After finding the hidden jar of peanut butter and licking it clean, they will continue to deny the accusations no matter how much is on their faces.

18. Dogs are an instant mood booster.

Even if you had the worst day of your life, your dog will greet you with tail-wagging and tongue out. It will always make you feel better.

19. They do really cute things.

When dogs hear a funny noise, they turn their heads to the side and their ears flop around. Their sneezes are really cute. Sometimes, they look at you to see if you saw their cute thing.

Whether you have a dog, cat, bird, duck, rabbit, or any other kind of pet, they will always make your life more enjoyable and interesting. If you're looking to adopt, think of rescuing/getting a pet from a shelter. It's cheaper that way and you actually save a life!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
