10 Steps to A Better You

Be Your Own Superhero This Summer

It’s that time of year when we want to pull our acts together and better ourselves as much as possible. Maybe it’s starting a new cleanse, organizing your entire room, or making goals before the school year starts. We all have that new diet planned or Kayla Itsine’s Bikini Body guide on our to do list. It may not be as strict as New Year’s resolutions, but summer marks the halfway point and we all know it’s time to put ourselves back on track. However, too much pressure to make drastic changes never leads to any good. What are my rules for you? Relax, and follow these steps to make this summer worth more to you than just unlimited drinks and endless pool parties (but then again nothing sounds bad about that).

  1. Follow through with Plans – Don’t tell yourself you don’t have time, or they won’t mind. They will. Make those connections and relationships with people. Grow this summer for yourself and for your friends. Plus, we all know the reason you cancelled is so you can have another date with Netflix.
  2. Make Time For Yourself- Sometimes we get caught up in constantly being with our friends, or our new summer fling, but making time for yourself will let you regain focus and remember what your goals are and what makes you happy.
  3. Remove those Insecurities- Don’t let your body image stop you from going out and doing things. You never know what you’re going to miss out on. Summer is the time to be your best you. That won’t happen if you keep critiquing yourself.
  4. Workout - but not as a binge trend. Workout because you have the time and those things called endorphins? Yeah, they make you happy.
  5. Give it Your All- Summer school, two jobs, an internship, and a social life? Yes. You can do it all. Prove it to yourself and you will feel unstoppable.
  6. Treat Yourself- Is there something you want? Work for it. Then have that indulgence. Whether it’s buying that new purse you've been eyeing at the mall, or the Bahama Buck’s you told yourself you can’t eat. You deserve that splurge and everything is better when you work for it.
  7. Go Somewhere or Try Something New Once a Week – You might be like me and are unable to afford that ultimate summer vacation, but you can afford adventure. Whether it’s trying a new bruschetta plate at Postino’s or finally hiking up Camelback, it’s the perfect fuel and solution when you are longing for a new experience.
  8. Stick to Your Goals and Follow Through – Yes, summer is full of temptations but it’s also the perfect time to learn self control.
  9. Do that One Thing That’s Been on Your To Do List Forever - It’s time to read that one book you set aside at the beginning of the year after reading only a couple pages, or finish that crafting project (for all my sorority girls) you stuffed in the back of your closet for a free day. We both know those free days don’t happen during the school year. So do that one thing you've wanted to do but have been making excuses as to why you couldn't. Well HELLO summer is here and your excuses are running slim.
  10. Search For The Thrill of It- Nothing will make you happier than those life-changing moments. You may have to search for them, or they may just stumble into you’re path. Either way these experiences leave you high on life and nothing feels better than that.

And finally, make it count. When you are about to do something, think will I be proud of this? I’m not saying don’t take risks and don’t have wild summer nights (trust me, I know those make the best stories), but if you think about your actions before, you will remember what you really want and what you don’t. And that’s powerful enough in itself.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
