Choker necklaces. Birkenstocks. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The tubular culture of the 1990s has regained relevance as of late, and I’m totally cool with it.
Why? Because the '90s were awesome.
The last decade of the 20th century truly embraced the teenage sentiment. With the rising popularity of grunge rock and the onslaught of movies and television shows set in high school, the '90s catered to the everyday pubescent frustrations.
Whether it’s dealing with bad boys in "10 Things I Hate About You," the struggle of virginity in "American Pie," or accepting your inner geek in "She’s All That," '90s movies hit the hammer on the head with high school conflict.
And if you ever tackled being a teen witch, 90’s cinema totally had you covered. (See: "The Craft," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Sabrina the Teenage Witch.")
The increasing popularity of sitcoms like "Friends," "Seinfeld," "That 70’s Show," and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" prove that the humor in the 90’s was on point. If comedy isn’t your thing, I’m sure you’ve heard of "Law and Order" or "Beverly Hills 90210." If I still haven’t convinced you that the '90s television realm was iconic, just remember that we got Uncle Jesse from those wonderful people.
Moving past the visual imprint the '90s made on our world, let’s talk about the music they blessed us with. The beauty of '90s music is that it was so versatile. In one corner, we have Britney Spears, NSYNC, and The Backstreet Boys. On the other corner, bringing us some of the greatest rap music of all time, we have Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, and the Notorious B.I.G. Sulking on the wall opposite of them are the pedagogues of the alternative rock era: Nirvana, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, and The Smashing Pumpkins.
'90s music had a little bit of everything, but at the same time, major turning points in each genre of music were made. The popular artists of the decade have often been quoted as "pedestals of inspiration" for our current musicians.
No one can write about the '90s without at least mentioning the fashion domain. With Doc Martens, ripped jeans, and flannel, the iconicity of '90s clothing can’t be overlooked. It only takes about five seconds into a movie or a show to tell if it’s from the '90s solely by how the actors are dressed. If they’re wearing knee-high socks and printed vests, it’s the '90s.
Sure, overalls and scrunchies were cringe-worthy, but that’s what makes it so great. Some of it is so awful that it’s beautifully tragic. (Cher: "As if!")
You have to admit, it grabs your attention.
There’s a reason the internet is littered with “Only '90s Kids Remember This…” and “Best Moments of the '90s.” We don’t want to forget one of the greatest decades of cultural significance. The '90s had a perfect mixture of cheesy movie quotes and backwards hats. Although no other decade can perfectly replicate the '90s like the '90s can, we shouldn't let this keep us from embracing the greatness of the era.
As the great '90s talking-animal movie says, “That’ll do, pig. That’ll do.”
