It is something that plagues us all when writing anything. You simply don't know what to write, how to write it, or even what to write about. There's not much to be done then just write a couple sentences, read over them, and abandon or delete them cause you frankly don't like them. It is a constant struggle to overcome this great block where ideas may or may not be there, and the flow of the words ceases to exist. It is kinda like the part of the your brain that handles writing takes a break for what seems like forever, and you are just sitting there waiting for it to come.
What to do when your brain takes a hike and you gotta write. Honestly, it seems to me that just writing anything and sticking to whatever you wrote beckons your brain back, and you get back onto the horse. I mean you can always go back and edit what you wrote. Then again, there are people who have been trying to write their next big novel and don't seem to be getting anywhere. I'm looking at you GRRM. Every writers' process is different, and unlike math, there is not a clear way to get over writer's block.
Attempting to get over block by writing might not bring solutions however. Some people end up just giving up on writing at that instance, and come back to it later after accomplishing other things. Writing brings a great sense of accomplishment when you finish a page, or a chapter, or a paper, or whatever it is you are writing. Maybe writer's block is your brain telling you to get that sense of accomplishment somewhere else. Your brain might be telling you to go outside, and get inspiration and motivation from the great outdoors or whatever happens to outside. It might help to write about something entirely different, and put your current project or idea on the back burner.
Procrastinating about writing might help so you can think of ideas while not actively attempting to put them into the fold. You probably shouldn't procrastinate too long as that writing piece has a due date -- real or virtual. Perhaps working in another medium even if you are bad it might help with expressing ideas. Who says that you can't be your own inspiration? It works for Leslie Knope after all and she's a congresswoman.
All and all, writer's block is a difficult beast to over come and fight. Maybe your friends and family can help you overcome it. Just try to do get over the block. I can't give you the answer to how to overcome your case of writer's block because after all, this article is my way of overcoming my writer's block.
