This whole situation has been going on for about six months too long. Day after day of discussion about what should happen to someone who may have known about the deflation of footballs.
Here's how it should have gone:
Colts: "Hey NFL, we think the Patriots deflated their footballs below regulation standards during the AFC Championship game in which they absolutely demolished us. Could you check it out?"
NFL: "Sure thing!"
A few days pass.
NFL: "Thank you Indianapolis for your concern, but we have found that science disproves your theory of illegal deflation. Not to mention Brady probably would have still beaten you even if he was tossing around BEACH BALLS, but really, thank you."
That could have been the end of it! Right then! But instead, Roger Goodell, Ted Wells, and countless others have gone on this mission, hell-bent, to not only tarnish the Patriot's record, but destroy one of the most recognizable, and not to mention profitable, personalities that the NFL has to offer. Tom Brady.
It has been almost impossible to turn on the television, scroll through Twitter, or read anything online that is sports related without having this "controversy" shoved down your throat.
At this point, I would rather hear about anything else. Literally ANYTHING. I would rather read through training camp reports out of Oakland or, god forbid, Tampa Bay before I read one more article about how Tom Brady might have, sort of, perhaps, kind of, maybe a little bit, it's more probable than not but we don't really know if he had even the slightest bit to do with the AIR PRESSURE in 11 out of 12 footballs.
If you haven't already guessed it, I am a Patriots fan and I am absolutely done hearing people talk about "DeflateGate." Here are the many reasons why.
First of all, I hate the name. I blame Watergate for this. I put up with SpyGate and BountyGate. But DeflateGate? I have to put my foot down. I don't know how to stress this point enough. NOT EVERY SEMI-SCANDALOUS OCCURRENCE NEEDS THE SUFFIX -GATE TACKED ON THE END. Nothing is more annoying than listening to a bunch of Patriot-hating reporters and anchors gleefully talking about "DeflateGate" because it rhymes and sounds fun. I wish we could call it "That Time the NFL Tried to Take Down the Greatest Quarterback of All Time for no Reason and with Minimal Evidence." That has a nice ring to it.
Hasn't science already exonerated Brady? How many scientists coming out and saying that yes, if you take an inflated ball from a warm room to an outdoor football field on a January night that the air pressure will indeed decrease, will it take for anyone to pay attention and realize that this whole mess was never even a mess in the first place? I don't get it. Maybe I'm bad at science. I mean, I am majoring in journalism, so maybe I'm mistaken. But I feel like the science here is all we need to put an end to it.
You also have people crying about how Brady "destroyed" his phone and "didn't" cooperate with the investigation. Hello? If I was as rich as Brady I would get a new phone every few weeks too and I'd probably see how many pieces I could smash my old one into just for fun. Aren't we all just kids at heart? And what kid doesn't love new toys and smashing things into itty-bitty pieces?
That's how I felt before Brady's arbitration testimony was revealed. Now that it has been, he seems even more innocent! Brady admitted that he does get new phones occasionally, WHEN HIS OLD ONE BREAKS. Not just willy-nilly because he can. I don't even know how many times I've replaced a broken phone with a new one. And that's with my minimum wage work-study job paychecks, not a million dollar star quarterback's salary. So of course he replaces his old broken phones. If anyone has the means to do so, they would do the same.
I can't stand how the media loves to rip Brady apart for this just because of who he is. They're so happy that pretty-boy-Brady finally made a mistake and that at last they'll have something against him. Really? This is such a stretch.
"He might have known that the footballs they were using were slightly too soft! We have him now!" Stop it. There are people in this league using performance enhancing drugs, recreational drugs, committing acts of domestic violence, and many other illegal things but all the media can focus on is air pressure. Is it just me, or is there a problem here?
I know Roger Goodell has made some questionable decisions in the past and when the rest of the league and its fan base called for his removal I never really had a problem with him. Nothing he did ever really affected me or my team too much, so why complain? I can't even explain how quickly he lost my support during this whole process. The initial punishment, naming himself the impartial arbitrator (don't get me started), and then upholding the punishment. It only would have taken one of those for me to completely lose faith in him as Commissioner, but all three? There's no turning back now.
In the end, it all is just a bunch of noise and nonsense for absolutely nothing. This may be the biggest reason why I'm over hearing about it. BECAUSE IT DOESN'T MATTER.
Even if Brady misses the first four games, it's not like Jimmy Garoppolo will be completely incompetent. He's not this aging veteran who never really clicked in the league who the Pats brought in with no intention of ever putting him on the field. Many think Garoppolo will be Brady's replacement when Tom eventually does (gulp) retire.
Does he have the talent to win four Super Bowls like Tom Terrific? Probably not, but who knows? The New England organization likes this kid. Belichick likes this kid and hey, if Belichick likes something, sign me up.
Worst case scenario, in the four weeks Brady misses, the Patriots go 2-2. Tom comes back against the Colts in week six (Patriots have a week four bye) and beats them into the ground with his eyes closed and one hand tied behind his back. You don't make Tom angry. You won't like him when he's angry. And neither will the rest of the league when the Patriots go 11-1 once Brady is back and finish 13-3. That gives them a first round bye and at least one home playoff game. Brady turns back into crazy post-season Brady as the Patriots make it to a seventh Super Bowl under him and Belichick.
The suspension has been upheld and it's going to court. The decision is supposed to be out before the regular season starts so hopefully by then we will be done hearing about "DeflateGate." But we probably won't. No, it will probably go on for who knows how long.
I, for one, am over it.
