An Open Letter To The People I Love
Kate Deng

I love you, G. I haven’t heard from you in what seems like years. We exchange semi-annual birthday wishes and “I hope you’re doing well”s but life just got in the way. But that’s okay, I will never forget you. You put depth in my life. I was floating above the surface before you dove in and saved me.

I love you, I. You changed the way I look at people. I think you were the first real thing in my life and you taught me the difference. I could not be more proud of who you are and who you’ve become. Every day I strive to be as strong as you.

I love you, J. No one has ever, and may ever, known me the way you do. Thank you for loving me unconditionally even when I didn’t love myself. You were there for me in my happiest moments and in my darkest times. I know I messed up a lot but I miss my best friend.

I love you, B. I appreciate you more than you could ever imagine. You have a vibrancy that can’t be ignored and bring color to my life. I will always believe in you even if you don’t believe in yourself because I know you’re destined to change the world.

I love you, S. I was scared before I met you. I didn’t know who I was or where I belonged, and although I still don’t know the former, you’re helping me find my way. You unintentionally brought me out of the dark and showered me with bright lights, and for that I could not be more grateful.

I love you, E. I know I don’t say it enough, but I do. I envy your passion and your outlook on life. I’m incredibly proud of everything you do. I can’t wait to watch us grow up and grow old together, hating on each other and belting dramatic duets along the way.

I love you, M. You are my best friend. No matter the situation, somehow you always know exactly what to say. You’ve taught me how to love, how to be kind, and how to be a good person.

I love you, D. You are my role model. I’ve always envied your perseverance and effort in everything that you do. You’re my hardest critic and my biggest supporter. You’ve taught me to be a stronger person and always put my best foot forward.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
