An Open Letter To My Freshman Year Roommate
readunwritten.com

Your freshman year roommate is one of the first friends – or enemies you will have in college. You spend months awkwardly texting and Facebook messaging figuring out who’s bringing the fridge while low-key at the same time trying to determine if they’re insane or not. But with any luck, you will get a roommate and a friend all in one, just like I did.

Madeline/Shmad,

In high school, I had always imaged my college roommate to be someone who was nothing less than absolutely awesome, and let me tell you, you exceeded all my expectations. From freshman move-in day, while I wasn’t necessarily sure about my choice in school, I was sure that us being roommates was the beginning of a wonderful relationship.

You were the first friend I made. In fact, we were practically the same person. There honestly could not have been a better match for two people sharing a closet-sized room for nine months. But now that we’re both preparing to graduate (what?!) I wanted to take some time to thank one of the most kind-hearted people I have met during my four years of college.

Thank you for the dance parties. Nights in the room weren’t quite complete if a random dance party didn’t spontaneously break out with Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” blasting in the background at least twice a week. A good laugh and a little stress relief was always promised once we started bustin’ out some (pretty awful) dance moves.

Thank you for the life talks. Not only were you my dance partner, but my confider as well. From boy drama to school problems and everything else in between, some pretty serious and heart-to-heart late night conversations were held in the four walls of that dorm room. Thank you for always being there for me and giving me advice when I needed it most.

Thank you for sharing my interests. From having the same taste in music, to the conversations using only SpongeBob references, to reminiscing back to the soccer playing days, to those bi-weekly dance parties, to all the time spent watching Awkward marathons on MTV, having you as my roommate was anything but boring.

Thank you for always sticking by my side. From the Target runs to the adventures around downtown to the days spent in the cafeteria just so the other wouldn’t have to eat alone, I was always in good company. Thank you for never making me feel like a total loner.

Thank you for letting me go. As painful as it was, transferring after my freshman year was ultimately what was best for me. And while the thought of not having you as a roommate anymore was more upsetting than anything else, you supported me 100 percent in my decision to leave and start a new chapter in my life. Thank you for being so understanding and not convincing me to stay.

Most importantly, thank you for being you. Having you as my freshman year roommate was hands down one of the best things I could have ever asked for (I guess you could say it was a good thing you weren’t totally insane). And even though we may have grown apart over the years, that doesn’t change the fact that I am so proud of you and all your accomplishments.

Through all the ups and downs, the memories that were made during my first year away from home with my freshman year roomie will always hold a special place in my heart. So again, thank you for everything.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
