An Open Letter To The Person(s) Who Started The Chain Of Violence

If you could only see what you have done to the world.

An Open Letter To The Person(s) Who Started The Chain Of Violence
Hope Harrison

To the person(s) responsible for these attacks,

You know who you are and we, the people of America and across the world, know who you are. It's obvious, because your faces are all over the news and one of the main stories talked about everywhere.

What were you thinking, starting this chain of violence? Actually, that is the problem. You weren't thinking at all! You weren't thinking about what your motivation was. You weren't thinking about the countless families and individuals out there. You weren't thinking about what the consequences would be. All you were thinking about was what change it would bring, the fear it would instill and maybe even the attention of the world's top governments. Thinking you wouldn't get caught, you took action.

You crashed the planes into the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001.

You shot young and innocent children and teachers in Sandy Hook Elementary School.

You raped innocent women who did nothing to you.

You walked into a gay bar and shot dozens of innocent people.

You shot the cops in Dallas, who protect, serve and have families of their own.

You drove a moving truck into a crowd of innocent people in Nice, France, killing dozens and injuring hundreds.

You added to the violent uprising in Turkey.

You went into a mall and shot innocent women and children in Munich, Germany.

But the problem was this: once you acted out your plan, the whole world witnessed it. You were caught in the act. Even if you took suicide as a way out, either by you or by cops, you were still caught.

The attacks succeeded, though. Here's why:

You divided America, though in previous years it had started to do that to itself. These attacks have divided people of all skin colors, churches, schools and government. You caused people of America to start pointing fingers at other countries, and vice versa. You made the war of races, the black lives matter vs. white lives matter, worse. These people see what you have done and start blaming another race, when in reality, it has nothing to do with race, but everything to do with world violence and stopping these attacks. The cops are praised for bringing you down and yet scrutinized and publicly shamed for doing their job. All lives matter; that includes both whites and blacks, together, equal, no matter what job they do.

You instilled fear in every person in each of these places that you attacked. A fear that has now run deeper than anyone is able or willing to admit. People are scared, angry, frustrated, upset and confused. People my age, the millenials, are dividing friendships and using social media to keep this race war going, because of you. But, being a millenial myself, I don't want this to keep dividing the people I care about and the friendships I've had for years, just because of race and the opinions people have on your attacks. Millenials and people older than us want three things: justice, equality and peace.

The one thing your attacks didn't take away from us: our perseverance.

We aren't going to hide away in our homes. We aren't going to be bystanders. We are going to keep fighting for peace, the right way. We are going to get over this race nonsense. We are going to give cops the respect they deserve for catching you and saving thousands of lives in the process. We are going to keep our heads held high. And we are going to stop people like you from destroying America and the rest of the world.

I don't know about you, but I think you better watch before you strike again. We are more prepared and armed with strength, dignity and perseverance than you realize.

Sincerely,

One of the many affected people in America and around the world

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
