An Open Letter To My Sisters After My Rush Semester
Brenna Johnson

Dear sisters,

Thank you for being the reason I am writing this letter. Thank you for being the reason I can throw what I know wherever I go. Most importantly thank you for loving me. I am one of the many lucky girls that went through recruitment and found my home. I got more than that.

Last semester I chose to go through formal recruitment and it was a little scary. When I finally accepted my bid, I was welcomed by all of my sisters, along with my new member sisters, into the sisterhood. I quickly felt that I fit in for the first time in my life. In the past when I would join organizations everything felt forced and there was a lot of uncertainty. This time there was none of that and everything felt right.

Thank you for teaching me about friendship

Before rushing I wouldn’t say I had a lot of close friends. A couple extremely close and then others that came in and out when convenient. After accepting my bid I immediately gained more friends than I ever expected. They have taught me so much about friendship and we all have our differences. Within the active members we have sisters from three different countries (Canada, USA and Nepal). Many different states and overall just different people. We all come together. If you need someone at 4 a.m. in the morning, someone will be there for you. Whether it’s a FaceTime during break or going to get McDonald’s. All of my sisters have taught me that people are not just what they look like on the outside, they are not how the dress they are not just what you can see. People are so much than their appearance. Every person you meet has a unique personality and if you give them the chance, you’ll learn there is so much you can relate with them. Friendship is not about: you do this for me and I’ll like you. Friendship is so much more. It’s about doing something because you want to and because that’s what friends do. Thank you to all of my sisters for being my best friends.

Thank you to all of my sisters for accepting me for who I am

In my one semester with my sorority I have not felt pressured to do or be anything different. I am so grateful for that. I don’t feel like I need to dress or act a certain way. I am allowed to be myself and everyone loves me for that. I love our diversity.

Thank you for giving me lifelong bonds that will never be broken

Regardless of where I live or where I go, I’ll always have these sisters as friends. They will always be important to me. I will always want all of them to succeed in everything they do and I can’t wait to see what the world has in store for each and every one of them. I can’t wait to be a part of their futures and continue to make memories. I hope to be able to travel and spend time with any of my sisters that want to after I graduate. We already joke about flying to each others weddings, it’s almost like we’re 4 years old and promising to be best friends forever, but I know this time around the bonds won’t be broken.

Thank you for being my home away from home

My mom always taught me that, home isn’t a place. It’s not the house I grew up in, or the town - not even the country. Home is where my family is. After accepting my bid, I felt at home on my campus - ultimately giving me two homes.

Rushing a sorority has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. It has allowed me to connect with people I would never have imagined getting to know. It has given me volunteer opportunities and more involvement on campus. It has given me people I will always feel safe around. No pressure and no judgement. There is always someone who wants to get dinner or wants to hangout. It’s home.

Thanks for letting me be apart of this, I love you all.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
