An Open Letter To The Perfect People

You're probably one of them.

Dear perfect people of the world,

It must be nice to be you. I really am jealous that you get to wake up every morning and know that today will be perfect because you are you, and you are always perfect. Your life is perfect, your job is perfect, and you are always politically correct. If you have kids, you are the perfect parent, and you set the moral standards for your family and friends. You're in perfect shape, you have an iPhone without any cracks, and you are never late. You are who everyone else wants to be. You're also the person who judges everyone and everything about the world by commenting on article after article.

You are perfect, so you don't see it, but your comments hurt the non-perfect people of the world. You are the perfect person, but everyone else in the world is a human, and sometimes humans mess up. Telling parents who have lost a child how to be better parents doesn't help anyone. Pointing out the fact that there are alligators in Florida doesn't give the Graves family their Lane back, it only makes the situation more painful than it has to be. Shaming the mom who lost sight of her kid at the zoo doesn't bring Harambe back or erase the traumatic memories that four year old will have of that day.

As for being politically correct, you are heteronormative and live in a world of privilege, so you are obviously allowed to comment on the recent terrorist attack against the LGBTQ+ community that took place in Orlando. Your way of life is clearly superior to that of everyone who doesn't see the world like you, so go ahead. Go ahead and tell the LGBTQ+ community that they got what was coming to them, and while you're at it, typecast the entire Muslim population and blame them for every wrongdoing in society. You are perfect, so your opinions must be too, right?

WRONG. To every perfect person out there who spreads hate and negativity around the internet by constantly putting others down or providing "solutions" to tragedies, just stop. Stop seeing yourself as better than everyone in the media. The world has seen a lot of tragic headlines lately, and your comments honestly will not change that. You may be perfect, but your comments are not. You may be perfect, but you are not powerful. You honestly may believe that you are in the right and that your opinion is the key to fixing the world, but I can promise you there is someone on the other side of the aisle who feels the same way. As long as we all keep seeing ourselves and our own way of life as perfect, nothing will ever get better in the world. The whole planet is full of breathing, blinking, living humans. We all have that in common. We all have something else in common, too. None of us are perfect. It's time we quit acting like it. It's time to support and lift one another up. That would be perfect.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
