An Open Letter To My New Roommates
HerCampus

Dear future roommate(s),

As the new school year approaches, there are a lot of things to prepare for: new classes, new clubs/positions, new people, and a new living arrangement. Getting used to a new home and new people to live with can be stressful no matter how much you try to prepare. Even if you're not moving in with complete strangers, starting to live with people you don't know well can still fill you with anxiety.

I have a lot of hopes for this year, a lot for myself but also a lot for my new roommates. Since we're living together and even if we're all busy, I hope we enjoy being in each other's company and our little space.

I hope we have an amazing year together. I hope we get to know one another and enjoy hanging out. Maybe we'll have roomie movie nights or go on late night food runs (Cookout, anyone?). I hope we have fun weekend adventures around town and find all sorts of cute little places to visit. I hope we meet each other's friends and make new ones. I hope we'll support each other and attend each other's events. Maybe we'll talk about our days around dinner and what's going on in our lives. Maybe we’ll even have late-night gossip sessions about our latest crush or Tinder match (or a real boy/girlfriend). I hope we share our stuff without hesitation and work as a team. Maybe we'll help each other study for those big exams we're worried about or proofread each other's papers.

I hope individually that you do well in classes and learn a lot. I hope you find your classes interesting and challenging in a positive way. I hope your grades are what you want them to be. I hope you find clubs that you love being a part of. I hope you have a lot of fun with your friends (and minimal drama). I hope that you feel at home in our new place and see it as a safe haven should you need one.

Most of all, I hope we get to know one another this year and have a great year both together and individually. I can’t wait to see you!

Love,

Your new roommate

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
