An Open Letter To My 13-Year-Old Self

An Open Letter To My 13-Year-Old Self

Ah yes, the joy of the teenage years. I know how excited you are about what the next seven years will bring. There are so many milestones ahead of you like high school, prom and boys. Things that you have the right to be anxious about. I don’t ever want you to lose that excitement because you should live every single day of your life with that feeling in your heart. Wake up each and every morning with happiness and curiosity of what that day has in store for you, even if it doesn’t turn out the way you had hoped.

Never let go of who you are, and who you want to be in this life. Everybody is going to have an opinion on who they think you should be, but don’t let that influence the great things about you. Don’t let that smile fade and don’t let that shine in your eyes be dimmed. Just be ready to stand in the front line, with your fists held high. Be ready to fight for who you are, and everything that you hope to become.

This next part of your life is going to be hard. You’re going to come face to face with a lot of problems. You’re going to start to notice things in this world that you don’t want to see. The evil and fear that lives inside each of us every day. There are going to be days when you don’t know if you can make it through, or if you even want to.

I know it seems like I’m looking at the dark side, but you need to be prepared for it, and be strong enough to get through it. You need to know that it can be difficult growing up and trying to find yourself at the same time. The worst part is the alone feeling you get, when you sincerely believe you are alone, and always will be. You start to feel like a flicker in the background of peoples' lives, like a quick blink in everyone’s day, and you wonder if that’s all you were meant to be.

But it is up to you to look past all of this. When you’re feeling more down than anyone could imagine, when you feel like you’re already six feet under and you believe with all of your heart that no one notices, or if they do notice they just don’t care, that’s the time to fight! Fight the anger you feel, fight the fear, and the pain, and the tears. Fight the tiredness in your body and your heart. Try your best to see the greatest not only in yourself, but in others as well. When you feel like giving up, like ending it all, ask yourself this. Are you really willing to end whatever pain it is that you are feeling right now, and give up the greatest moments in life that are yet to come?

Because I’m not.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
